It is a hard time especially seeing your dog was so old..but you did what was right.

One thing that really sucked was when we were on holiday and our police blood lines german shepard was baited (poisoned).

So sorry mate, sometimes i think loosing a pet is harder than loosing a realitive, i think its casue the dog is the best friend you can have, they always love you and are always loyal, unlike some humans.

Sorry to hear it mate, i have posted this before from the dogs view.
I have trouble reading it at any time.

If it be I grow frail and weak,
and pain should wake me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
don't let your grief then stay your hand,
for this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come will have no fears;
you'd not want me to suffer...so,
when the time comes...please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
but stay with me until the end,
and hold me firm, and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time, you, too, will see,
it is the kindness you do for me;
although my tail is last waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you,
who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close - we two these years -
don't let your heart hold any tears.

And though our bond can't be broken apart,
make room for another in your home and
your heart.

It's terrible thing to experience. The relationship between a dog and his/her master can be extremely close and intense. You feel like it's an act of betrayal after a life filled with love, loyalty and friendship. The reality is making that decision and having the courage to act on it was the biggest act of love between your dog and yourself. Imagine the comfort of knowing that someone would be there for us all, from the very beginning to the very end. It’s only something us humans can only wish and hope for.

My thoughts are will you and your family

Losing one of your best mates is always a hard thing, dogs are truely something especially when they are faithfully and youve had them for a bloody long time, but atleast you know shes in no pain and hopefully in a better place.

16 years is a darn good innings for a pooch. I bet she was loved and felt secure all her life. And in the end you would not let her suffer. You have stood by her all the way. You could do no more.

Sorry for your loss. Wait a few months and get a puppy. Hang in there.

My Border Collie is my best mate so I know how you feel.

'Pets' become more than that, and become part of the family.

The look on their eyes when you come home from work - they always give you unconditional love. They know when you're upset and try to make you happy and are always a faithful companion.

I would be heart broken if 'my fella' left us.

Ah I knew I shouldnt have opened this thread. Now I wanna call home and listen to my dog breath on the phone.

I've never had to put down a dog... and I dread the day that I would ever have to do it. But it would be better to let the girl go when shes not in pain than have her around in agony.

That poem was so sad!! :(

Go down to the local shelter and get another one to fill that gap. Saving another dogs life is what your dog would have wanted! Our dog was 'saved' and I think he knows it ..... coz he luvs us soooooooooooooo much

Any time a pet is lost, it can hurt a lot inside.

A few years ago, my parent's whippet got out and ran onto the road while we were away. We got back, and found her remains on the road. That was incredibly sad. She was a beautiful dog. We ended up getting another whippet, but I still loved our old one.

Mate, I am so sorry to hear about this, You said you cried more for your dog than your Nana, I can also relate to this.
October 15 2005, my cat Ella had a fit and died in my arms on the way to the vet.
To this day i still grieve for her and have a bit of a cry.
August 31 2006 my Mum passed away from cancer, i don't know if it was that i had more time to deal with the "getting used to the idea" by way of knowing it was going to be anytime soon due to the cancer, but I feel so guilty in a lot of ways that I grieve more for my pet than I do my mother.

I spoke to sevral people about this, (profesional councellors) and they all tell me that a grieving process has no timetable. They seem to be of the opinion that Mum's passing will hit me more in time, and that maybe its too much to deal with at the one time, but they assure me it will come when it's ready.

My deepest condolences are with you and your wife.
I hope this helps

It is a very hard decision and the after effects go on for sometime afterwards. I'm sorry to hear about the inevietable mate. There is not much that can be said that may comfort you or your wife apart from the obvious and that is time will heal all wounds. Go through your grieving.

I sit here at this keyboard listening to our 13yr old Boxer (about 94 in doggy yrs)snoring his butt off outside the screen door all the time knowing that his time is drawing ever so near. He was our first child and he knows his place in the family. With the kids in the yards, he is always there to keep an eye on them (two steps behind). Although nowadays he is happy to just watch the traffic drive by and people walking there dogs. Reminds me of an old man.

Some free advice. If you ever get another hound, let them pick you. That's what I did and it has worked a treat. The puppy that comes back all the time and sits with you is the one you get. Once again, sorry mate.

Falcon Coupe, you are a big softy. Top bit of literature mate.

I had to put down my dog last year. Holding him while he died was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

I am sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear mate , it's a sad time. In the past i have had to have my labradore and calpie put down due to old age , both got to around 16 too and were blind , deaf and couldn't smell, and had athritis bad :(. I have also had a budgie which was like a best friend , very tame , it died of cancer half way through its life !, i even miss that bird badly ( little white albino budgie ). Also a chocolate point siamese cat i owned years back had to be put down due to its bowels blocked badly :( .
Every time i have a pet pass away i say "thats it, no more" , but when i think of the life i can offer some pets ( better and more loving than some homes , i love pets ) then im usually suckered in. My only pet i have these days is my little pugg x chuawa which is getting very old now , and also has had epeleptic fits all its life, its doing very well considering. After this though i need a break anyway so i can holiday for a bit , its been years since i have a holiday due to pet commitments.

So long as you gave that dog of yours the best life you could possibly give it , walked it often , fed it well , looked after it well , plently of loving etc etc... then your dog even though passed away probably lived a longer and better life than it could of elsewhere. Remember the good times ;) .

Very sorry to hear it mate. Of course they are a part of the family, and you miss them so much. I had to get my cat (yes, I know he wasnt a dog but I grew up with him and loved him) put down on my birthday (as my parents couldnt face it) and then bring him home and bury him... and then his brother died within a couple of weeks as he was so confused and lost and exhausted. Very sad time so yeah, its very hard.

As someone above mentioned, get a new family member from the pound - there are so many and it is heartbreaking. Recently we at work ran a collection of pet food for the Animal Welfare League for Christmas. Over a few months we collected over 1/4 of a tonne of animal food and you know what they said? They said it would last them a few days! Its just so sad. And they said they needed puppy and kitten food the most...

Perhaps saving the life of a little furry person can somehow make your beloved dog happy, when he is up there looking over at you all!

Take care

Jac

Sure is..........isn't it 7 human years to each dog year?

7 x 16 = 112

"Holy Smoke!!"............Hope I make it to that age, "really doubt it though"

She had a great innings mate, obviously led a well cared for and well loved life, it's hard when they go but you did the right thing, I stood there while the vet put down my 12 year old Golden Retriever 8 years ago, he was full of Cancer..........still remember it clear as crystal, "damn......as I type this I'm sitting here at work and my eyes are tearing up, I can hardly see what I'm typing."

Just hang in there mate, time heals all.

I had the Vet put my Blue Heeler (Bandit) down just before Xmas after having him for 15.5 years. My wife balled her eyes out and I was sort of okay at the time but miss him badly now. I had Silverchairs Diorama CD on in the car coming home from the Vets and it played "My Favorite Friend" which now when I miss him I play and remember what we did together.

I had Moose, my mate for nearly 19 yrs.
I had her put down on March 12 2000.
Every year i sit down with her Urn on March 12 and have a chat and shed a tear.

Things will get better, you will start remembering the good times, the little things that made your dog your mate.

thanks guys for all your kind thoughts....

my dog was a german shepherd and the vet said that she had only seen one older(18)

i wont be getting another dog i have two others (a 12yo kelpie & 10yo blue catle dog)

the kelpie is very diferent without her good mate marnie with her.
i think she knows whats happend!

ive also got 4 kids that have all come along in the last 12 years, and when i said that i thought it was the hardest thing ive had to do... i was sooooo wrong

after posting this last night i had to tell my 6yo daughter who spent every minute she could outside playing with the dogs that Marnie was in heaven..... now that was the hardest thing ive ever had to do.
