Default TrANS Cooler question

When you hook up a trans cooler on an Au do you have to top up the oil in the transmission? I tried a search but couldnt find anything.

my guess would be it wouldnt hurt to top it up, check the trans dipstick that is if you have one, otherwise i'd undo the trans fill nut found on the right side of the tranny and undo that and pour some in until it dribbles out. when it starts to dribble out alil thats enough.

Joe. I never topped up the tranny fluid in my huge tranny cooler and it went the same.No probs.

True there only hold as much fluid as you can hold in your mouth..
not that i've tried.

Installed 2 coolers for towing, checked levels b4 and after mod and saw a NIL difference in fluid levels

im doing it tommorow. I might put a bit of fluid in it just for safe measure. Its the size of 1 and half magazines say so its decent. its made by Derale in US. I'll try to get pics its a bastard of a spot.

The trans cooler will take up some fluid because the cooler takes fluid and the lines too if they are extended at all. Also if you lose fluid when undoing cooler lines etc. So the level will drop in the trans, maybe not much but enough to warrant topping it up. Go for safety and longevity, check and double check everything and thats my philosophy for survival. :

Just as a precaution ... top the auto up till the fluid dribbles out the side drain plug ... the BTRs like to have enough fluid in them ... the tempramental bastard ... LOL

Better to be safe than sorry I reckon.

If someone told me there was about as much fluid as you could hold in your mouth in a trans cooler i would laugh. that is just silly talk, varying sizes of coolers would kill that and also who the hell drinks trans fluid or even holds it in their mouth hahahahahahahahahahaha. I would find a new mechanic :

yeah i know. its a big cooler so i will put oil in it, theres not much room around the radiator this is gonna be a pain in tha *** to do.

The trans needs to be at 50 deg to check the level correctly. To get the trans to correct temp if the engine is cold is to test drive the vehicle for about 3.5 to 4.5 kms at light throttle so the engine does not exceed 2500 rpm. Once done place vehicle on level ground (or 4 even height jack stands and remove filler plug (16 mm nut) the fliud should just dribble out of the hole.
Too cold and you will overfill it too hot and you will under fill. Make sure to run it through the gears too to make sure the fluid has worked its way into everywhere it needs to be.

well i did it. 3 hours it took me. i put 250ml's into the transcooler couldnt be bothered getting underneath the car to top it up not much oil came out anyway.. It was a ***** to do i must say. whilst under the car i noticed one of the walsh plugs are rusted and coolant is leaking out so thats a bummer havent drivin the car yet but started it.
