my oldaman is running the Athlon 64x2 AM2 , no problems with it at all , extremly fast pc (especially for decoding stuff and 3d stuff etc etc). If your going to get a new m/b and gfx card, do yourself a favour and go for a m/b with sli , it's alot faster than agp and the results realy show too imo ! , i wouldn't have a clue what the cheapest 7950GT goes for at the moment, but it's an excelllent gfx card , the setup you are looking at with some decent ram would make a nice setup ;) . gl , cheers.

I've been using an X2 for a while now and they're very fast. Make sure you have enough ram to support it though

yeah got to get DDR2 about 1or 2gigs worth in Corsair
im not really sure why a 64x2 AM2 cpu is better than the 64x2, besides it using less power but it generates MORE heat???? the rest is the same. anyways looking at about $1000 to spend might even go dual screens as well :P

Here's a Wiki of different system recommendations/configurations, only recently updated.
http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/...ecommendations And for cheapest prices on your 7950GT check out www.staticice.com.au You can narrow it down to your state by entering " state:qld " in the search bar. |

I'd spend the little extra on the opteron processor myself. Remember Windows Vista is likley to be the new operating system next year, and the opteron will take full advantage of the 64 bit processing not that the atlon 64 won't. I currently run dual opterons on a tyan board under Windows Vista 64bit build RC1 and it rocks. Whatever processor you chose, make sure that it supports the SSE2 instuction set, such as opteron and Athlon 64. The opteron runs faster under vista than athlon 64.
Cheers

I want a X2 now. I haven't herd a bad thing about them only good. They had the 4800x2 and now have 5000-5200 x2's. Combine that with 2gig ram Smooth as a baby's bottom.
I remember about 12 months ago they had a big test somewhere, Can't think of the test's done but they used the Fx cpu overclocked too 3gh/z some AMD64's Intel dual cores and P4's and a 4800x2. 80% of the test's the X2 won or came a close 2nd 3rd. That's big competition against it. I have had my hands on a AMD XP-M for 3 years overclocked and running strong, Can't wait too get my hands on a X2

The new Conroe shits over the AM2 X2's... they are a bit dearer though...
AMD still seem to be a better choice for the entry to mid level market though |
