I think my shocks r on their way out. My car handles like crap when it used to own now i find i get a lot of roll in my car especially in the back when i used to be able to gun through roundabouts and leave bricks for dead (still do but crazy as hell). No way as firm as it should b. I was just wondering if any1 has any ideas for replacement ones, and bout how much they r worth. Also wondering if its possible to repsray the clear coat or do you have to respray the whole carcoz mines peeling coz of the ****en bushfires.

i would be looking at your springs first. push the car down by hand and if it bounces up and down the you need new springs.
if you push it down and it comes up and sits there then they are fine. this wont matter if your shocks are stuffed or not. springs are the most forgotten about part on a car when it comes to replacement. |

Nah pretty sure springs r fine. ill prolly take it down and get one off thoses pedders checks. Wont b happy if anythn is wrong already spent a lot of money (>$5000 and got the car for $4000 but parents paid and my car has NEVER broken down) gettn it running all fine. engine runs excellent so now its time for other stuff to screw up. I had my swaybar bushes replaced 2 months ago and that has improved it a great deal on handling. tyres r all fine aswell i just dunno why its being a biatch. I dont intend on doin it up at all just want it to handle like it did when i got it coz it will b a while b4 i get anutha car (got 1.5K in the bank lol) Its got good performance for the price of the car (and sounds pretty meaty aswell) but need to upgrade :p.

I have a 1988 Telstar TX5. I used to have all pedders under it. The shocks and lowered springs were about $1000 all up. It lowered the car about 40mm (could have gone further) and handled ok for the price I payed. About 6 months ago the front started to sag and it felt like I was driving a boat. The car sat lower to one side and just felt like crap. After some research, I purchased an old set of original strut towers from a wreckers in Brisbane and a new set of Koni shocks (to fit inside the old struts). I took them to the local suspension specialist (not pedders) and had him construct the shocks (they remove the old shock from the tower and insert the koni shock). The Koni shocks were available in either internaly or externaly adjustable. I purchased the internal set because they were cheaper and I only wanted them set at rock hard. I also purchased some super low whiteline springs and front and rear sway bars. All up cost was about $1600 - $1700. The finished product is well worth the cost and as the saying goes - "You Get What You Pay For". Send us a line if you need more information.

yeah pretty sure i have pedders aswell but unsure of how old the springs r. ive had the car for bout 2-2.5 yrs. i got 16" mags on it and the back aint too bad but the front guard i think ford made it a little to big coz the gap is huge and apparently im as legally low as u can go. if i had to get new springs then i would up grade. my insurance policy says > or = 30mm. does any1 know the lowest u can go wit the springs. lol i think it would b a while b4 i get anythn fixed though coz i only got $1500 in the bank. but definitely would go as low as legally possible coz ive been pulled up a few times and the cops have gone over my car trying to defect me and im like "OMG its a f**kn telstar" lol. so yeah nuthn that would attract any defects.

The gap between the tyre and guard up front is so much because it's a front wheel drive car. I had my springs custom made. In Queensland you go as low as you want, just as long as the lowest point of the car is atleast 100mm of the ground. Mine is on the minumum height and I still have a gap of 20mm at the front. The back sits nice but.

yeah not sure bout the legalites in the ACT, there seems to be no comprehensive websites on wat mods u can do to ur car. the cops in ACT pick on pretty much any1 with P plates on so u want to make sure its legal. plus insurance aswell wants it to b legal and i dont pay rego or insurance (my mum does) so she wants it to b legal aswell. mm got to get it checked first and then do sum shoppn round. there aint very many auto aftermarket stores in ACT as u could imagine.
YAY OWNED ANOTHER FALCON 2NITE even wit shitty handling :p |

I guess all you can do at this time is plan what you intend to do to the car, research the areas that you want to modify so that you don't get ripped off and save the pennys. Best of luck and happy modifying. Let us know how it goes.

yeah dont plan on modding it anymore. i just think if wat u say bout pedders is true then there is no way im gettn them fitted again. i mean if i was selling my car in like a coulpa months then yeah id go budget but im goin to have it for a lot longer so might aswell improve on wat i have. the only mods ive put on my car r as a result of needing to b replaced. had to get a new air filter so stuck in a K&N panel replacement (these do make a good diff- if ur sceptical bout it), had to get a new muffler so i got a cannon. had to get new wheels so got good ones.
there really is no point doin mine up wit like a turbo or anythn coz my paint is screwed and thats prolly the most expensive thing to do. if it was fine then i would as my is like 80000ks under for its age and had no engine probs, the interior is near perfect. lol my power windows r screwed which i have to fix. but its goin on winter now so no point. my car is nice enuf. there is one TX5 ive seen cant remember if it was on the forum. it is so nice. black with red interior but its auto. if i had the money i would like to do that. anyways in regard to my question bout my clear coat. would u know if its possible just to spray anutha clear coat over once its all flaked off? iv heard u can get it buffed. |

when u say flaked, do you mean the paint. cause if your paint is flaked, just take it back to undercoat and have it resprayed. I bought mine of my mum which she had from new. she only put 130000 on the clock over 12 years. all up its done 220000 (not bad for a 17 year old car) I gave mine the paint over when my roof started to crazy crack, & only set me back about $3000. If your paint job is ok and isn't "thinning" in places (paint lighter or darker in places) then you should be able to aply a 2 coat clear over it. what colour is yours?

nah no paint is commn off just the clear coat. ash from the bushfires bruned through it let water and shit in. i have a metallic silver paint on mine. ppl have said if the clear coat is commn off then u have to go back to the undercoat and respray with paint and clear coat but my paint is in good nick wit the exception of a nasty ding in one of my doors which has been rustproofed. yeah the roof is peeling, the boot, startin on the doors. its just a shame coz it really makes my car look bad. my bonnet has got tha cracking in the paint but not the clear coat when like bird crap and that hasnt been cleaned off but thats just easy to replace. i was just thinkn is it possible just to bolt in the 1990 model tailights u know the good lookn lights that suit the car more.

You'll have to source the boot mould as well, cause this matches the lights.

yeah man uve got a really nice car. love the colour. i think u should seriously consider boostn the biatch seeing as though uve got the right look happenin. so how much u put into to it to make it look so nice if u dont mind me askn?. r u running 17" wheels coz i was told u have to have 6.5" wide wheels at the most and i havent found any that r less than 7".
i measured my ride height. i got 50mm form guard to tyre on the rears, round 80mm on the front, and lowest point from the ground is 140mm. these r approximate though. i would need a new rear bumper. tiny bit of bodywork and a respray. but then i got to fix my power windows and get the interior cleaned as roof is dirty from previous owners-little kids with dirty fingers!!! should of seen all the crap i vacuumed out of it when i first got it. i spose i would rather the engine be runnin good and drivn well then lookn nice. a bit of me wants to get anutha car, and anutha bit of me wants to bling it up coz ive seen the results of sum other TX5s and they truely stand out coz **** all ppl do em up- well in canberra anyway. if i win a lot of money and i mean a lot (sighs doubtfully) i would do my baby up and also get anutha car Last edited by MITCHAY; 20-04-2005 at 02:45 PM. |

When springs are stuffed they tend to sag...look at a lot of stock XF's, heaps of them are a lot lower in the back end, this is due to sagging. |

Hi i own a 93 tx5 v6 and i got the same problem my clear coat is peeling off... do you know approx. how much it costs to have a clear coat applied???? its on my bonnet and roof. i got it for :evil_laug $4500 a while ago and love it too bits the interior is immaculate, great suspension, new driveshafts, quiet, fast engine ect but recently the head gasket went and now its living on chemi-weld diet. Also the clutch could be done. I got quotes for $700 for my clutch and $1400 for gaskets as its a fair task on the v6.. but is it worth it? and with clear coat??? any advice appreciated cheers :voldar02: |

u got a good buy i reckon. my parents paid $4000 for my 89 TX5 (it is a ghia though) but had reasonably low kms (220k in bout 01 or 02 only put 27k on it). havent had any probs wit engine nor has it broke down.
believe me if all i had to pay for was the clutch and gasket id b happy. ive spent more than $6000 on my car for a $4000 car. a head gasket is a bitch on any car. now my clear coat is goin and that would be $$$. ive been waitn for an exact answer aswell i have no idea as an exact figure (been searching whether u can do a clear coat again or need a full respray, and which would b worth doin). i think u need to strip the whole section that needs to b redone to redo anythn regardless of paint or clear coat. im waitn for mine to flake off naturally and ive heard u can even get u paint buffed and comes up reasonably good (not sure if its true or not) dont know if its worth doin respray or not. if ur not goin to keep ur car for ages prolly not worth it. my car is would look a million bucks if it got redone as its in good nick mechanically wise now that everythn that can has been fixed. basically whether sumthn screws up or not its the luck of the draw. ive put too much into my car just to let it turn to a shit heap and now it seems it will b a long term car as i just cant afford anythn. i think it all comes down to whether its gonna b a long term car and if ur gonna mod it. if i find out anythn ill let ya know and if u find sumthn out drop us a line cheers |

hey i gotta quote for my paint job... first off, once the clear peels you have to go back to bare, so basically mines its stuffed. he quoted me $950 or a bit less for cash and he would strip and redo my roof, bonnet and front quarter panels. but then the rest wont be as good so i might as well get whole fn lot done$$. im now in such an dilemma with this car... fix! sell! or destroy! :togo:

Yeah ive got it on my roof, some on doors, hatch. The roof itself is basically half the car cause you have to do the whole panel. Did you ask him bout buffing it up instead? How much for the whole car? If your gonna mod it fix it cause there's no point having nice wheels exhaust etc on a shitty looking car. I know if my clear coat wasnt ****ed it would look a million bucks.
