Well the time has come again to change cars and the old ED will be put to pasture. This time around (falcon #9) will be an AU2 i've decided. Going for the AU2 due to better brakes, and a few other improvements i heard they received.
I'm looking to purchase either a forte or futura (or higher if i can pull it off) for around the $6000 mark. Am i dreaming ? Or is this possible. Hopefully around the 120-150,000km mark too. Anyone with advice on what to look out for ? Problems, issues, pointers apreciated. Looking to purchase late this week/wkend. Thankyou as always Chris.

As always Chris your turnover in cars astounds me!
AU2's are a good solid car and apart from the usual things you would check on any car, the only model specific thing I can think of is rust around the boot area (underneath the lid around the back window is a bit of a problem area).

6k will get you a decent k mont or ghia, possibly even an AUIII. Look for rust at the boot strut mounts but only be concerned if they are about to break off, they'll all need a bit of a repair. Other than that there are the usual 6 cyl (if that is what you are after) isssues and steering racks can be an issue. Make sure all the displays on the mont dash are working too.

AU nice choice ;)
however I must say, if you're going to buy one, go Fairmont, at least then you wont regret iut later down the track wishing that you had gone for the extra options (im not dissing the lower model boys : im just saying) AUII Fairmont (even GHIA) would be ideal, but if it's not in you're price range, i'd even go down a series and buy an AUI Fairmont, over an AUII Forte

I daresay that a S2/3 Mont or even Ghia should be achievable in good nick with good kays for 6k. Just gotta look around and be patient, and ignore the dreamers asking 12k for Ghias!

Mine is on the higher side in klms but you'd be very hard pressed to find better. At the end of the day a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Nothing more nothing less. As for your original question Chris for 6k I would be lookin for a Ghia mate. Don't be affraid to insult people with an offer. If they have 8k on it offer em 5k. I do it every day with trade ins. You'd be amazed what people will accept for their cars if the money is waved in their face. |

thanks for the help people.. I have managed to stretch the budget to $8K now, so i should be able to pick something pretty reasonable. Now it's just a matter of getting to melb to do the deal on something.
cheers again

Confirming what you said about making offers, while you will insult some people, you'd be surprised at what you can end up with.

Spotted an AU2 Fairmont for $4995 on Warrigal Road, Cheltenham.
Seemed cheap for a car yard? Maybe I missed the extra digit?

i've today been offered (from a yard) a ba fairmont for close to what i wanted to spend on this AU! So now i have to re-consider everything again. Buying cars is frustrating... but i do love it at the same time.
