Question - Before I paint the rotor hats, will I need to get some Wax & Grease remover to rub on it first? And also, should I sand the surface before painting? If so, what grade sandpaper?
What have some of you guys done before painting the brakes??? Cheers

I should clarify that these are NEW slotted & drilled rotors....just want to paint the hats so they don't rust up!!!

Just took them out of the plastic covers......they aren't covered in any sort of residue....fingers virtually clean when i ran them across surface....so is there anything I should use to prep the painting surface?

Give em a wipe with prepsol mate, they will have some oil residue on them.A bit of prepsol on a rag is easier than sanding and repainting due to ugly fish eyes!

White spirit or drycleaning fluid from Coles or Woolies would be the best sub for prepsol. Use metho if you have to, but use 2 rags, one wet with metho to wipe the rotor down, then a second clean and dry rag to wipe off the drying residue.
This is the best method I know of to get rid of any oil before paint. (at home anyway)

If they are the RDA gold passivated ones then I don't think they have any oil coating on them.
These are rust resistant and the gold part on the disc itself quickly wears off. I bought these as the hats then don't need painting. |
