Default AU fairmont Ghia Shocks??????

Hi All,

I need some good honest advice on what shocks to use on my AU Fairmont Ghia with IRS.

I can't afford to go Koni's or Pedders sports... They want too much!!!!

It's lowered & has pedders heavy duty springs 2638 up front & 2639 in the rear.

What do you suggest??????

Cheers

Hi

Just be carefule it is not the strut tops that need replacing as the rear of those cars are common for it & makes the shocks seem like they are stuffed.

Also being lowered if the struts need doing you are much better off fitting either the Sports Ryder Struts or Koni in my opinion as the car is limited in suspension travel & will drive much better with the right strut. This also looks after the rest of the componetry by limiting the amount of suspension travel used allowing all other parts to last longer. Better value for monet over time. Hope this is of help.

As the Pedder man says get the right shock for the job, if you throw crap at it you will be back here in 6 months saying the same thing, save up for them if you have to as the right shocker will last 3 to 4 times longer than cheap and nasty in the end

I couldn't agree with the last 2 posts more.
I know as we all do that quality suspension is dear.
But in the long run you are so so much better off.
Do it once and do it right. Cheaper in the long run.

I know where you are coming from!

Pedders down the road wanted a tad under 3 grand for their ryder suspension package i.e. shocks, springs, fitting and swaybars... and I'd be all for it... if it wasn't half as much as a paid for the car in the first place!

Been looking around and kings springs with Monroe GT shocks come in at around $600 for front and back, although im sure they are no where near the quality of pedders or konis :(

The thing to remember when doing suspension stuff is...if you are doing it your self is when you ring around to get prices make sure you ask for the correct product, as Pedders have 3 basic shocks,Standard, Comfort gas , and Sports ryder, as do Monroe with std. gas ,GT ext. and other brands, the price difference between each is grade is rather significant , then if you decide to have then fitted you can compare the fitting cost from the various suppliers, this way you will able to compare all the cost involved

It really depends on what type of driving you do and how you rate handling vs comfort.

I've had a few "non-expensive" (not Konis etc) combinations and for my driving - 90% long trips/10% city driving - the best compromise is the coil/shock setup I bought off GK.

I can't rem what they are, other than some sort of "touring" setup.

George!! What were those springs and shocks you sold me? lol.

When these need replacing I may look at Konis etc but I'd really need to be convinced that whatever extra I get in the handling/comfort stakes is worth the extra $$'s.

KYB, Boge is a good compromise. But you do get what you pay for.

Guys

Prior to this I had tickford springs up front & pedders touring springs 6409 in the back with monroe gt gas shocks all round.... I've also got the weight of the LPG gas tank to lug around!!!!

It drove like a bag of SSSHHH........t!!!!!

Now with the Pedders Heavy duty lowered springs all round & the same monroes, it's driving a heap better but want to improve it that bit more with new shocks???

I've heard KYB's are a good shock & great value for many money????
I want something a little better than standard though....
But I'm not sure what else to go for!!!!

I'll put a vote in for BOGE. They are a good compromise as AZZA has mentioned. Not overly expensive. They are german made iirc, and some merc, audi's run these shocks. (correct me if Im wrong). You can get the fronts in a short shock for extra travel ability on lowered springs too.

Check out our site sponsor Fulcrum suspensions for a deal. Be sure to tell em your a member for FFAU for further savings.

Could always investigate Koni Reds if the yellows are out of your price range.....personally I'll put a vote in for Koni Yellows!!!

But BOGE would also be a good option. If they're still too much, try KYB???

Hi i have KYB's in my Ghia, got them for around $480 and they ride very nicely. I was going to go for Boge but I'm told they dont make short shocks for the rear with IRS

The ride quality of Koni yellows is fantastic. I would save up for them. You will not regret it. Depends how long you intend keeping your car of course.

Thanks mate, I already have BOGE shocks, but never knew Pedders do them also. Thats good as I have a Pedders around the corner from me that I could go to when my current shocks give out.
