That is correct, the use of velocity in those equations doesnt work.

While travelling at 100, a=0 but at the collision, the car(s) decelerate (negative acceleration) to zero after the impact. The rate of deceleration is simply taken as identical for each car as we are given the parameters of same car, same speed.
