I dont have an XR8, but I have an auto 6. I went from 3.08's to 3.91's and its probably the best mod Ive done, sits around the 2200-2250 mark @ 100km/h, I get around 11L/100km normal driving, only bad thing is the speedo is out by a long way. Feels a lot better in every gear at every RPM.

yeah 3.9's would be a great set of gears for an auto XR8..
it'll bring the beast to life... take off will be dramatically better, but as monty said, it'll rev a bit higher at 100km/h.. you can get the speedo corrected to match the gearing so your speedo won't be out at all..

Nah can't tune it, you can buy an electronic chip to alter speed at the ecu from jaycar or go to an auto electrician

I had 3.9s put in a couple of months ago. Factory ratio is 3.45. Day to day driving is where you notice I thought. Just moves along easier. Feels a lot more suited to the engine.
Revs at about 2400 at 100km/h. |

How much worse is fuel economy and would 3.73 be the best all rounder for street and highway for a a speed???

I would be game enough to use 4.11s if I ever had another chance the economy improved around town and on the hwy it was probably another 2-3L/100 from a car with very good economy to begin with

Thanks Scotty85. I assume thats a new gear set and not second hand? Does it come with new bearings etc, or is that just the labour only?

thats new gears fitted, unsure about additional components such as bearings, etc.
EDIT: I just realised that the price MAY be closer to something like 1800 for new gears. Im not sure as i also got a quote for diff repairs around the same time. Sorry as that is a significant price difference. :( |

Ok, so it sounds like it depends on the mob doing it. There is no real gauge as to what the price may be. Probably best to discuss with the diff mob prior to booking anything in.

They can't correct it at a mechanics as you only get gear synchros for up to 3.45 as that's the shortest factory gearing
some might install the jaycar kit or you could do it yourself

Nah it doesnt change a thing. Mine still shifts the same. WA diffs who did mine said they never had an issue with any and they've done a few.

Same I just left my speedo. I've worked out roughly what im doing at different speeds on the speedo. If I really want to know I just check the GPS.
