I second that about the gearboxes, up north hear they make them live a bit longer by changing the gearbox oil when they change engine oil, toyota in there wisedom made the box stronger but halved the oil amount in gearbox, thats why they stuff up because oil goes crappy.

not a huge amount of problems have come across my desk so far (work for toyota in the parts department), just regular servicing, and repack the wheel bearings every 40k...

Lets see they are about the most solid 4WD ute you can buy. the 1Hz (4.2 diesal) will push out a easy 400,000km, don't know about this gearbox stuff, it may be weak, but with the 1hz pushing the gears you will only brake it if you abuse it.
I'm not a Toyota fan but the early Crusers and Hilux's are about as solid as they come they just keep on ticking. I just did 1650km in my 97 Hilux in 2 days, it's got 225,000km on it and at 110km/h the old hilux is pushing 3600RPM... Didn't use any oil didn't miss a beat the hole way, engine fires first tick of the starter.

Cheers for the replies, comments duly noted, ideal ute is a new V8, but way too dear. But I guess if your prepared to spend that sort of dough I could just keep the 45 and throw this sick piece of gear in it!!!

From first hand experience i second all of the above comments. Scary slow, scary thirsty, first sign gearbox is failing is it dropping out of 5th into neutral randomly of its own accord. Beg borrow or steal the extra for the factory turbo and go twice as quick with less fuel. Awesomely tough vehicle, great brakes etc etc. Good quality aftermarket shock make them ride lots nicer too

Hear hear!
The gearboxes are weak, but spend the extra on the later model 4200 TD. You'll get a 2" longer cab and front coil springs. Easy picked by the 6 gauge cluster with volts, fuel (x2) temp along with tacho and speedo. |

The last of the 4.2 litre turbo diesel models were brilliant. Plenty of grunt, reasonably quiet (for a diesel) and don't have the oil consumption issues of the late model diesel V8s. I would save money and aim for one of these eventually.

the $$ you spend on the extra repayments for a turbo cruiser will be nothing when compared to the $$$$ you spend on extra fuel in the NA model.
the NA at worked used more then double the fuel that the turbo does. and the NA are gutless as.....! but on the plus side the NAs have better crawl capabillity, eg for driving slowly through rough stuff . the turbo at work idles too fast and wants more revs or will stall where as the 4 year old (200 000km) NA (which has just been replaced with a new nissan) would idle very low and just keep plugging on up a hill. we had no probs with the gearboxs or diffs but the handbrake rarely worked ( but that could have had a bit to do with the mechanic who serviced it )
