Hi all, Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!
I have looked through previous threads to see that I am not the only one to have a problem with the ABS Module. Had mine checked today after intermitent problems then ABS and Tracion Control lights on constantly. After Xmas I will book it in to have the module removed and checked, just thought I would check to see if there is any more options available at the moment. It is a common problem my sparkie managed to get mine repaired......however they are enormously expensive to replace so if it can't be fixed you will have to try and find a second hand one.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to drive the car normally if this sort of thing happenes ?.

Thanks for the feedback. You can drive with the lights on which means neither Traction Control or ABS works, however, if you are involved in an acident and it is determined that the items were faulty you could be charged with driving an unroadworth vehicle. It is illegal to have these items if fitted to a vehicle not working. So I will try to have it repaired, thats why I came here to ask for assistance. Thanks all keep up the good work.

Dave: when you had yours repaired did you have to have the system bleed? As I understand it the module comes complete with the pump and my brake man's reader can not read the cougar. I had to take it to Ford to have it correctly diagnosed and that took them 3 hours it's scary to think how long it would take to remove and replace. Any advise would be appreciated.

The cougar went to 4 different mechanics and none could read the ABS system(including Snap-on), they were ok on all other areas. Ford checked the ABS module and all the related wiring and found the module faulty. Now I need contact from someone who has replaced one to see what is involved and if a diagnostic tool needs to be used to bleed the system. Thanks for your input.

I don't know how they used snap-on. You have 3 choices, you can go into Australian cougar, European and American. Either European or American gives complete options. You can trace and check every circuit and wiring with the tool. You can activate every switch or accessory using the scan tool. That's how deep you can go with snap-on. These tools are tricky, with USA one you select mercury cougar and sometimes you need to select contour or may be Mazda or jaguar. With European cars it's always tricky using these diagnostic tools. I worked at European transmissions specialists where it was always challenge to get into transmission electronics on different European cars. But end of the day we never had to opt for dealer help. Anyway, Dave should be able to tell whether you need diagnostic tool to bleed the unit. I don't think it is necessary but you never know.

Hi, I have a similar problem with abs and traction control lights on dash. Are there any mechanics in Melbourne which specialise in Cougars, to slow down the learning time?

I had this problem as stated above and this is an electrical problem so don't take your car to a mechanic. Find a good electrician and take it there. Most mechanics will tell you, "it's faulty, get a new one" and that's about the limit of their knowledge. My advice is that failiure is caused by vibration & heat and it is a common problem on all vehicles of this type that used the Mondeo layout.
The ABS modules are virtually impossible to replace and cost about U$1000.00 in the states so if you can get it repaired it is worth it. If the ABS light is on it means that the ABS is NOT WORKING which will only be an issue in the few seconds you absolutely need it. I don't know about bleeding the system as this is not my area of expertise. Hope this helps.

If you manage to find anyone wrecking cougar then you can pull out abs unit, module and get away with just couple of hundred dollars.

Update:- I found a company in Sydney. ABS Module Repair "Specialised Automotive Electronics" e-mail - abs@autoelectronics.com.au - the cost was $275 + postage, it was a 1 week turnarround. My brake mechanic removed and sent away (just the module not the whole solinoid unit therefore, no bleeding of the system) then reinstalled on return. This company rebuild these for most makes and models however this was the first Cougar unit. So far so good if there are any problems I will advise. I found 4 units in wreckers from $250 to $450 and there is one on ebay at the moment but there is no guarantee other than an exchange part (if they have one). My local Ford dealer quoted me $6600 for the part plus $660 to install (that is the complete unit which includes bleeding the system. I hope this info is usefull to others.
