Well I think your all wrong, there's only 1 car that has received international recognition from this country.
The Lightburn Zeta from the 1960's. It went backwards by stopping the engine, turning the key the other way, putting the engine into reverse. I Kid you not. I think you'd have to go back a fair way...the first Falcon was just a Yank Falcon with a few mods to suit our conditions, the first Holden was probably "more" Australian being designed here, but still drew on it's Chev roots.

The words "best Australian built" infer built and perhaps build-quality rather than design but I think they meant to say designed and built. As there was no build quality worth speaking about till the 1990s (if not later... if at all!) that narrows the field somewhat.
So while the P76 is a candidate on design, on the basis of both factors I think we'd pretty much narrow it down to the Territory, recent Falcons maybe. The build quality is still a bit touch and go though! Holdens were never in the running I think and mostly haven't been Australian designs anyway. |

Yeh the VE has a superior rear end...
Everything else it lacks though, gearboxes, blind spots, under power V6's, cheap seats, cheap materials. VEII Omega feels just like a VR Executive, especially in the seat material department.... In saying that however Id still drive an SV6.

I think in terms of "impact on the customer" and actual originality of design from here in Oz, you would have to make a three way tie between the HQ Holden, XA Falcon, and VH Valiant. The Valiant and the HQ were, however, the only ones with truly Australian engines at that time (in six cylinder hemi, and the six and eight cylinder Holden engines, not the Chev)

My personal list of the best Australian car models:
- Fords: XP, XB, XF, AU, FG - Holdens: EH, HR, HT, HQ, HZ - Chryslers: VH, CL, VJ - Mitsubishi: GH, TP None of the local Toyotas really capture my interest. Nor do Leylands efforts. |
