Exclamation Worlds Largest Bottle of Scotch Goes on Display

The world's largest bottle of single malt Scotch whisky has gone on display in Edinburgh.

Standing at 4ft 9ins, the giant bottle of Tomintoul 14-year-old single malt contains 105.3 litres and would serve up 5,250 drams.

The record-breaking tipple is on view to visitors at the Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh until April next year.

The specially-commissioned bottle holds 150 bottles and is worth about £5,000.

It has a gigantic cork and oversized label, and required a team of 14 people to fill and close it.

The bottle left its birthplace in the Highland village of Tomintoul for the first time since it was created in 2009, arriving at the visitor attraction on Thursday.

Susan Morrison, director of the Scotch Whisky Experience, said: "We are already home to the world's largest collection of Scotch whisky, so it seemed perfectly fitting that we host this record-breaking bottle for its first appearance in the capital.

"It makes an ideal addition to the existing elements of the attraction and we expect that it will be a very popular photo opportunity with visitors."

Curious, in the photo the girl is not standing beside the bottle but seems to be some way behind it.

Clever photography anyone ?

Only 5000 pounds? Seems a bit cheap to me. You'd think it'd be valued at considerably more

Was thinking the same thing..... In the Gobi Desert the people and 4x4 Vans for that matter are actually tiny due to poor diet...

Lets do some rough calculations lol.

If we assume the bottle is 60cm diameter, and the main cylinder is around 3.5foot (lets call it 105cm) then the fluid in that portion would be around... 296L

Prob another 15l in the neck??? hmmm

310 litres of grog...give or take.

Also, google and wikipedia tells me 105.3 litres make up around 29,000 'drams' ;)

It's becoming more and more obvious that the BBC reporter was sampling the product prior to writing the story!

A dram of scotch (and only scotch) is any measure the pourer chooses to give, from a mere dribble for somebody you don't want to drink with to up-ending the bottle for a good night of drinking.

In reality in Scotsville a dram will end up as 1.25 fluid ozs (UK) or ~35.5ml

A real dram is actually a 1/16 of an ounce equivalent to a traditional teaspoon measure.

Personally I prefer the scotch.

Haaaa well there is a lot of conflicting info as to what a dram actually is in real terms. I found from 'a wee bit' to a teaspoon, to 1/8th of a fl ounce to between 3.55 and 3.7ml depending on your accent. As well as a unit of 37ml.

Now I'm thirsty... that bottle of Chivas in the pantry is looking very inviting ;)
