Has the car played up while at the mechanics?
Do you leave the car long enough for them to experience the problem? How often does it do it? Is the car stock?

does it die while accelerating or when you back off/idle?
my AU did it when i backed off after a service, turned out the battery had been disconnected and the computer reset. the car had previously 'learnt' its way around a fault with the idle control sensor, but the computer reset made the fault appear and couldn't learn around it. upshot was a new idle control sensor and a few days at another workshop with a $700 bill.

Is it going in a straight line or when turning a corner ?
If when turning a corner it could be the power steering sensor that controls the engine speed had this issue in a company car i had Jason

If it will keep idling but only stops when you drive it it maybe not enough fuel flow....? fuel filter. Or maybe ignition ... Igniter or crank angle sensor...?
When it stops, how do you get it back home?.....will it start and idle immediately? Lot of ?s

Sounds a lot like the problem my old Nissan experienced. It would run fine for a fixed amount of time, then it would cut out due to no fuel getting to the engine.
Turned out it was a split in the fuel pick up in the tank. |

When it stops and won't restart, can you still hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to ignition?
May have to lift the floor in the cargo space to hear it better. |

First find out if its fuel or ignition,,
If fuel it could be pump or pump relay.. Check if it has an alarm ?? {was an issue with my car recently ] Check all ignition connections, YES TFI can give you grief.. I suspect fuel pump issues.. Oh yes put more than $2 fuel in at a time.. LOL..

I had an EA that did a very similar thing (and funnily enough it was the only thing that went wrong with my EA) i had to replace the whole dizzy which was cheaper in the end because it comes with the tfi mod , after i replaced the tfi mod and it still would die

99% sure its the Dizzy and or TFI module on the side. EL went back to the dizzy before the AU was released. TFI module gets hot and engine loses spark. When it cools down off you go, one day it will stop for good.
