I've put this up in the AU section but there's more traffic here during the day and it'll be too late by tonight so here's the story.
I'm changing the tie rod and drivers side front hub on an AU and the car is in pieces as we speak so I need an answer asap if anyone can help. I need to replace the drivers side tie rod as the rose joint is rattly but the tie rod doesn't seem to want to budge and undo from the rack. I can feel that there is a small cut out on the bottom of the rack shaft where the tie rod screws in and was wondering if it's a key way or something as I can't get my fat head under there with the car just jacked up and supported. Is there a key way under there with a key locking the tie rod in place or is it just that the tie rod is stupidly tight and I just need more leverage? I don't want to go leaning on it if it is locked in place as any number of nasty things can potentially happen if I put enough muscle into it, so any guidance would be much appreciated. Sorry, but that's scary - mucking around with steering + no qualification + lack of knowledge.
Take it to a specialist.

Gee, thanks for your support and bountiful knowledge. You must have missed the part where I said I already have it in bits. It's a tie rod, not rocket science and there's no indication on the new tie rod of any key way or key but it is an aftermarket unit so I just want to be sure before I proceed.
As soon as I change the rod I can put it back together and it's booked in for a wheel alignment first thing in the morning just up the road.

OK, couldn't find my AU book, but I have an ED manual and a BF one. Both say you remove the rubber boot first (so I assume you've done that anyway). The BF one says the rack end should come off using vice grips to lever it. Th ED one says to turn the steering all the way left so that the RH rack end is exposed, and then you can undo the rack end from that point, holding the rack end with vice grips to stop it going back in. Do the opposite for LH side. Maybe a combination of these will work on an AU??? There is mention of a tapered shaft, so it will be tight.

Ok, done, it's all good. I just had to drop the sway bar to get enough range of motion to screw it off with a spanner.

Well, the job is done and the car back together and tracking better than ever. Thanks JC, for telling what I needed to know, it helped alot.
Upon reassembly, and using my best guestimate as to alignment, the car was all but spot on. It had a slight pull to the left but no worse than it's been for the last 4 years since the last wheel alignment and after a quick tweak of a 1/4 turn of the tie rod the car now tracks perfectly straight at all speeds and is as good as it's ever been. I'll still get it double checked on a wheel alignment rig but I'm pretty confident it won't need much adjusting if at all. So the scary "mucking around with steering + no qualification + lack of knowledge" wasn't such an obstacle after all. Maybe it's dumb luck or maybe, just maybe, it's a basic mechanical aptitude and understanding plus a bit of common sense that got me there, but I'll let others be the judge. Cheers Bushbasher

Well, I took the car in to Port Lincoln get the wheel alignment checked yesterday and ................. it was spot on!! The caster was within .02 of perfect and well within spec and the camber was still exactly the same as it was the last time the car had a wheel alignment over 100,000km ago, which tells me the front end bushes are still fine as well so I'm a very happy camper. While I was there we got the car up in the air and double checked that the tie rod was tight to the rack as I was concerned I didn't get enough leverage on it when I fitted it on the ground, and while at it we chucked in some new sway bar shackle bushes as well, so now it's as good as new.
 Sorry everyone, I know that all sounds a like a bit of a self indulgent brag but I just couldn't help myself as it was my first foray into front end components and geometry, and that was quite daunting before hand but proved itself to be not as hard as I expected. Cheers Bushbasher
