Default BMW to unveil new-age 3.0 CSL

Quote:

BMW is set to pay tribute to its much admired 3.0 CSL with a modern day concept car recalling the rakish good looks, engineering idiom and functional simplicity of the iconic lightweight coupe.

Set to make its public debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy next week, the one-off 3.0 CSL Hommage is the latest in a series of retro-inspired concept cars created by the BMW's own in-house design operations to celebrate significant models from the German car maker's past.

BMW has released a single conceptual drawing of its latest concept car ahead of its planned unveiling. It reveals the 3.0 CSL Hommage takes its styling inspiration from the original model, which formed the basis of a successful foray into touring car racing for BMW upon launch in 1971, albeit in an updated form that takes advantage of modern day construction techniques.

The two cars share a number of classic design cues, including the side window graphic, C-pillar treatment, integral roof spoiler, large rear wheel arches and prominent rear wing.

BMW adds the new concept also draws on the visual character of the earlier 3.0 CSL with what are described as "striking air deflectors, stretched flanks, finely sculptured surfaces and a distinctly sporty front and rear end".

In keeping with the lightweight theme behind the original 3.0 CSL, the new BMW new concept is said to make extensive use of carbon fibre, although specific details are being kept under wraps for now.

The lightweight premise continues to the interior, which in the words of BMW's design team is "rigorously pared down" and "possesses high-quality structural or driving-related functions".

BMW has not yet revealed if the 3.0 CSL Hommage is based on an existing BMW model, nor what powers the one-off concept car.

BMW has regularly used the Corcorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este held on the shores of Lake Como to pay tribute to models from its past. Earlier Hommage concepts have included M1 Hommage revealed in 2008 and 328 Hommage unveiled in 2011.

Further details on BMW's 3.0 CSL Hommage are planned to be revealed on 22 May.

I hope it is a naturally aspirated straight six worked to within an inch of life!
300+kw and under 1400kg would be nice.

Someone at BMW has to be pulling our leg.

They’ve made me laugh.
