Indeed interesting read, after a couple of years ownership of each vehicle I wonder if the final verdict would be the same ???

The big chief has a dmax auto 4x4 company car, I wouldn't buy one with someone else's money, it's the base model but little things like light up key hole, some of the heater controls don't light up with lights on, big green square LCD radio display like a 1980s calculator, no DTE, engine is loud as hell like the original 2.8 rodeo, auto trans clunks bangs and generally holds gears way to long at low throttle, the Rangers we have at work have 150,000 km of mining kilometres and barely driven on bitumen and they are so much quieter, trans is smoother so much more power

Hate to break up the party but the decision has been made and the deal has been done (hopefully not too many spelling mistakes) thanks for those that replied ,going with the Isuzu Dmax as I drove most of everything else ,spoke to every dealer and came away with the best feeling from the Isuzu agent I dealt with and it's going to do everything I want at a price .Which means I have more money to waste on my old ford.

Sounds like a service or several missed or not done properly. 4JJ1-TC only loud if the tappets haven't been done and most shops avoid it because it's a PIA! Gearbox sounds like it's due for a service too...

Change oil/filter at half book and religiously change the fuel filter same or every second engine oil change and it will just about go forever. Very tight engine when new (.0005 piston to bore clearance) takes many km's to loosen up and perform. Basically a bulletproof vehicle though they really do need a decent set of shocks from day one.

What's the go in shocks ,have had nothing to do with 4 x4s but man when you look into it ,it's huge .Not going to be doing any serious 4x 4 stuff but during this holiday there is a lot of places I would love to go I could not in the ltd ,just beach access etc not to mention 500plus Kms on a 43 degree day and no a/c.

Depends on what type of 4wd driving conditions you will be doing, by your comment don't worry about them, you will know when the time comes if you need to upgrade.

D-Max that's almost day one but then an MU-X is far worse

Look at what the mines are using.
One years use on a coal mine site is probably equivelant to 5 or 6 years or even more in the hands of normal human beings...

The mines around here used to be infested with endless numbers of Hiluxes, until a new policy came in which says no vehicle on site from January 1 unless it has a five star NCAP rating. They did have Rangers...for a short time...but blew up engines, gearboxes, and bent suspension parts and steering arms. They seem to have D-Max's and I think Navaras now.

I don't get that. I've taken both of those for a test drive over the last couple of weeks and the dmax was very harshly suspended and the navara was the opposite, way too soft. You need to take motion sickness tablets prior to going for a drive. Only had 1200 k's on it. After the test drive I got out and pushed down on the bulbar and it just kept on bouncing.

"Comfort" is hardly a priority when it comes to mine vehicles...they're just basic models filled with hundreds of kilo's of "mine spec" equipment.

Anything is better than the original shocks they all come with.

The mine I am at is mainly 6 cyl Landcruisers. They go out of their way to get the 6 cyl ones. Any new utes that contractors have are PX Rangers.

The energy companies have changed to D-max too. We (Ford/Isuzu dealership) sold/serviced shed loads of 'em. Very impressed with the reliability

Just passing on the info. We have a few hours at the mine to sit and basically look out the window while loading and just watch the vehicles, as well as being driven to the back of the train by mine guys if there is an overload on the train wagons. They talk plenty about the vehicles on site.
I brought up the lack of Hiluxes and increasing numbers of other brand fourbies and have been told several times about the "five star rating" requirement. I also commented that I did see a lot of Rangers, but they seemed to "go away" and you started to notice other makes like D-Maxs and Navaras. That was when I started hearing stories of damage occurring to Rangers.

For the street? They might be fine for years. But as I said, if you want to find out how much punishment a fourbie can take, talk to some mine guys...it's probably five years plus of normal street use compressed into a year if it's used on a mine site...

Ford sell heaps to mine sites. And have developed a mine pack for them. They certainly aren't dropping off sales to mine sites that's for sure. If anything it's the Hilux that is dropping off.

Only single reason for that is the "five star" requirement. Plenty of peed off tradies and contractors up this way who have nearly all been buying Hiluxes since the year dot...some leased only very recently...who now find they're not allowed onto a mine site because of their choice of vehicle and are now stuck with a car that ruins their business, despite being a perfectly good safe reliable ute.

Work has had months waiting for the last model hilux. told this week the fleet will be looking for other brands. no ford as they had been expencive to run.

had months waiting for extra cab Dmax.

new facelift hilux came with a jump in cost.
