3G mobile phone info....

Hey,

Im new tyo this 3G mobile stuff...

My question is, will a 3G phone (ie. nokia 6280) take a normal simcard?

its not locked to any network, my question is, is the 3G simcards different to normal simcards..

it will take a normal sim card to turn it on and play games n' stuff but you need a 3g card to send/receive calls and text, etc...

hmmmm... thanks... well the situation is i may be getting a 6280 or a N70 and only have a normal optus account.. will it still recieve calls and messages? I understand i wont get 3G calls etc....

Why not just move over to the Three (3) network. You can keep your same number.... Optus should be able to upgrade your account to a 3G one.

You would not be able to make ANY calls on the phone, as it does not a GSM transmitter in it... (wrong words but yeah)

I bought an NEC e616v 3G phone a couple of years ago with the full intention of using it with a GSM sim card. It worked fine.

I was able to send and receive calls and SMS but MMS and WAP was a bit of a problem. I never bothered to figure out the WAP settings because I sold the phone a week later because the battery life was so bad, I couldn't even get a full day of normal use out of it.

Shame really, it was a great phone.

is there any way you can try it out beforehand?

actually, 3G phones DO have a GSM receiver. When you go outside of the 3G zone, it roams on Telstra's GSM network.

hmmm phones are good,
yeah i got a 3g phone with a 2g sim (a "normal" sim), you can use any of the functions that any other 2g phone has no problems, also i cant see why optus wouldnt let you ahve a new 3g sim for a little $$$ after all ppl love takin your money off ya so why wouldnt they offer the service?

GSM phones use a SIM card (2G)
3G (WCDMA) phone use a USIM card (3G)

The two are very different. HOWEVER, you can use a 2G card in a 3G phone. The phone will function just like it would as if it were a 2G phone. So you dont get any video calls or fast downloads.

You cannot use a 3G card in a 2G phone. It just wont work.

You sure can. I use one in my motorola. I work for telstra and recently changed to a 3G sim due to the extra phone book capacity

Are you sure that sim card is a 3G WCDMA card and not an extra capacity SIM? I havent worked in the field for about 20 months now but when I was still working for Nokia, you couldn't use a WCDMA card in a GSM phone.

ive got an old sim(optus) in an N70, everything works fine in regard to calls msgs etc, good phone.reommend it.didnt even know there were different cards,but havent tried vidie calling etc,not pasrticularly interested
