i dont know how these 2 guys kept a level head. i cant even begin to imagine, 1km underground, in a pitch black 1.5x1.5m space for 5 whole days (120hours) of silence, no contact and no idea of when/if rescue teams were on the way. maybe no one was looking? let's think about that. i reckon i would have been out of my mind even after an hour.

the fact they didnt continue digging themselves out was the smartest thing they ever did, continuing to do that would have fatigued themselves further and possibly trigger a fall in ontop of them.

i think they deserve all the praise we can give them for helping each other through what would have been a hellish situation. the rescuers deserve praise too for their hard work, but wouldnt have ever been needed had the mine followed proper safety ethics.

of course they deserve praise....and upmost respect for toughing it out....
all im saying is that they did what any other miner would have done in that situation....others may have went mad and not survived.....more focus should be put on the dudes digging through near impossible rock on there backs for hours

I'd love to be there now, apparently the pubs in the local town have free beer today, they said on the news that the one pub went through 2 kegs of beer in the first hour after the rescue...ie before 7am... :sm_headba

Congrats to the two blokes who got out. Doesnt matter what anyone says, they are seriously tough for getting through it, and so are their families (if one of my kids or my partner were down there for 14 days, I would not cope, Im sure). Big congrats to the blokes who rescued them too, it must have been hard work and pretty scary too with the danger of more cave ins...

It is good to see some Aussies care about other every day Aussies, and it is good to see how people support each other, and show respect for people doing tough things. Being able to empathise with others is great thing!

Great for them to be free and to be able to attend the funeral of the deceased miner. Well done to all involved.

Gotta tell you.. After being up since 3am with the youngun & then watching those guys walk out of the mine was one of the most amazing sights I've ever seen in my life.

A massive congratulations to the men, rescue workers, families & the dearest of thoughts to the family of the deceased who was respectfully buried today.

A very big day in Australian history kiddies. And what a bloody great thing to start the day with some magically positive news. Life is a wonderful thing people. Never ever forget that.

Well done to the resuers (sp?). They put there lives on the line for someone they did't know to help out a mate. And well done to the town and coiuntry for uniting behind the unlucky / now lucky miners.

was anyone else sickened by the footage of Eddie McGuire having a beer with the miners. Do you really think Eddie would be interested in having a drink with a bunch of miners at ANY other time?

the pathetic shallowness of the australian media continues to amaze me.

the single, only, SOLE reason the media is there is for RATINGS!!!!!!!!!

they don't CARE about anyone except themselves, and as soon as the public is over this disaster or when the next big story breaks, they will disappear from Beaconsfield sooner then you can say 'ratings gold'.

i am so sick of it.

Lol - that's possibly one of the greatest statements i've ever read!

Was truly an amzing story down in beaconsfield. Congratulations to those who walked away. Kudos to those who worked day and night to rescue them. But i wont get too overjoyed - we all still mourn the tragic death of one man. Lose of life in a workplace must surely be the most tragic way to leave this world.

On a more positive note - i look forward to not having to hear tracy, koshie or anyone else use the word "bloke" in the media for some time.

Or, to put it differently:

Our media really does take a page out of the "fox news" handbook on coverage of a tragedy.

Print media coverage was quite good - informative and factual.

Is this another case of damned if you do, damned if you don't?

He gives a generous offer and gets shot down for it, every news crew in the country was there but he was the one to give something back to them and gets bagged, in my view it's the others that should be bagged for not giving anything.

incorrect.

they are all bagged because they are all guilty of using the misfortune of others as fodder for their ratings addictions.

perhaps if they had handled the situation with even a hint of restraint and professionalism, I would be a little less scathing in my attack.

unfortunately, I can't see that happening any time soon.

Thumbs down

The media are only there for ratings and Eddie, he is hopeless,he just wants to be noticed. You know the only time you heard are saw from Kerry Packer was if he spent a million on gambling or if he got sick. Eddie is like here i am look at me, dont i look like a million dollars. :

Eddie drinking with miners would be a big step up from socialising with his Collingwood members!! As for the media, shows just how bright they are when they pay very little time to the fact that one of their peers passed away there and received very little exposure for it. Any other time we would have been bombarded for days and channel 9 would have pumped out a special on how wonderful he was.

The media really lost me after hearing the stupid and ridiculous questions they asked during the second iraq war press conferences, and a few others since. From what i've heard though, these guys should take a leaf out of Mel & Kochy's book, they spent time with the families unbeknownst to anyone and it only came out after it was all over and the families thanked them, anyone else would ahve been in there with cameras and turned it into a circus.

its becuase channel 7's ratings have been blitzing 9's up untill a few weeks ago...then 9 made a little comeback untill this mining thing happened

7 has vowed to host a charity event....now 9 are doing the same...
Eddie was there purely to get 9 in the loop as 7 had taken over the coverage

they were family freinds mate....Mel and Kochy are nothing but a Hologram of Society Pillars

They think they are the scoial conscience of Queensland and there egos are bigger than the bullcrap piles spweing from there mouths

they care for nothing but ratings and fame......but they were family freinds of the miners

time for my opinion....
i think its great they survived and all, i mean 14 days underground and all... but they have been offered $3,000,000 EACH to tell the news of their "ordeal", what can they say? it was dark and tough, and emotional? come on, we already assume that but isnt there a better way to spend 3 mill? i understand its the stations money but these guys knew the risks of their work and that cave-ins can be a fact of life in these mines. And also they keep being branded heroes... this really annoys me, ANZACS and others that risk their lives for others, NOT sportsmen or miners that all they did was survive, the rescuers are closer to being heroes than them....
i expect people to have a go at me for this but i dont care, this is my opinion and if you cant accept that, its your problem, not mine... (no pun intended)
