Default New NPR cameras on trial in Victoria

The State Government in conjunction with the Victoria Police are trialing new Number Plate Recognition Cameras. These cameras record number plates and instantly check them against Vic Roads’ and the police’s databases to instantly recognise unregistered and stolen motor vehicles. What they haven’t told us is that the system can also tell the police if the registered owner of the vehicle has any outstanding fines or warrants. I think the Queensland Police had a similar type of camera in operation a few years ago. Something new to look out for.

Cheers, Danny

I saw these on today tonight or ACA (cant remember exactly) the other night. They put 4 cameras in an american police car and drive it around town. The cameras face all different angles so they can pick up upto 10,000 numberplates per hour. If a stolen car is detected then an alarm sounds and the car is recovered. I quite liked the sound of it.

Yes if it's fro theft detection, sounds good doesn't it. Trouble is its just a matter of time before its miss-used by Bracks, Carr etc to prop up their economic mismanagement. Just like speeding detection is good in concept, these governments have manipulated the rules to make it a steady earner.

How long before it gets misused, want to be pulled up fined because your dog license is 2 days overdue. Safety-T-Cam technology has operated on the hume for several years using similar technology it was introduced to control heavy vehicles driving for excessive periods and do some checking for stolen and unregistered vehicles. Bracks has already made attempts to hijack Safety-T-Cam as a speed revenue device. Unless a clear statement of procedure and some leisaltive guidlines are made public we should be voicing objections.

When SAFE-T-CAM was introduced they said it was purely for monitoring Heavy Vehicle movement, well it didn’t take long for this to be abused. Those cameras are extremely sophisticated and can zoom right in to the truck’s interior showing all sorts of things in high detail. Radar detectors on a vehicle dashboard for example. Funny thing is that the NSW privacy laws prohibit frontal images to protect the driver's identity / privacy. That’s why you don’t see a speed camera (not to be confused with X and K band or Slant radar) pointed at the vehicle from the front, they all photograph the vehicle from the rear. Well in Victoria they don’t care about privacy, they will photograph you from any angle they can. In Victoria they were even talking about trialing cameras mounted in the road surface for areas where conventional speed cameras couldn’t be located. They want to cash in the motorcycles that ride up the Black Spur.

Cheers, Danny

No disagreement from me, I had a little to do with safe-t-cam at one point. There is lots it's capable of, but the guidlines of its use were quite defined. However whilst we tolerate Bracks & Carr creating new legislation at their own whim, who knows, what will happen. Look up at the Safe-t-cam road bridge next time you choose to exceed the posted speed by more tha a few Kph, thats right, did you smile whilst you did it. No you won't get a fine for it in NSW (at present) but the hardware is all in place.

And Bob has to somehow pay for all those spin doctors, and think tanks, and enviromental impact studies, tame consults, fat govt pensions, etc.

You bet your *** they have been.
Everything from unpaid fines, suspended drivers and unregistered vehicles..
There have been 2 articles now in the west Australian newspapers & from memory out of 15,000 plates that were scanned, there was 700 odd infringements given.
whilst they stopped you for whatever reason, They checked out your cars road worthyness.
A good reason why i dont drive to Scarbourgh etc anymore, Black & loud attracts the wrong attention sometimes.

soooo the moral of the story would be:

if youre going to drive an unregistered car, make sure you fit some paid up plates, from someone that doesnt have any unpaid fines???

Gee, I don't know where you've been mate but that's a load of excrement.

I for one have driven through Safe-T-Cam (cough - Greed-E-Cam more like it) at way above the limit many times - no photo. I've driven through them over the limit in a truck. No photo. In fact, I've driven through them at way earlier than my check-in time and no photo as well. They often don't work anyhow and anyone half smart knows that at night they can be beaten easily. Why do you reckon so much traffic runs overnight? Yes, schedule and business for sure, but time also has its influence.

Sorry, but Greed-E-Cam is not all its made out to be. Those truly involved in its development recently stated publicly that they regret how it is underfunded, not properly maintained, and has been hijacked by the RTA coats for purposes it wasn't intended for.

As for NPR cameras, in the ACT they ran out of romm to park all the cars during the first days of the trial. Good stuff. but as usual unroadworthy cars with steel hanging out of the tyres go unnoticed as long as the ydrive at or under the limit and are registered. WOFTAM.

The Safe T Cam on the menangle bridge here in syd takes it's photos from behind. All the gear is mounted on side of the bridge, has no choice to take photo's readings from behind.

Been under the menangle bridge a few times at twice the posted limit. Did notice in the local paper a while back that some locals were using the camera's as target practice to hone their sniping skills. There's now 2 camera's monitering the bridge.

Btw we have had about five subbies knocked off for arriving at the next check point a tad early in the last year or so.

Know a bit about the inner workings of Safe-T-Cam Do we?
I can see how you'd pick up lots of tech data driving under them regularly.

No there is no photo, and I dont remember saying there was and its not all that useful using a flash with a video based system either. What I did say is you will often see an indicator flash. Heard of video caching?

The fact that you have not received an infringement does not mean the technology has not logged you actions. Lots goes on under other surveilance systems that is not acted on either.

{common belief is that most heavy transport moves at nigh because those are the periods drivers are most likely to be able to tune into the 4hr uniterupted broadcasts of country & Western music.}

There you go, now your making some sense. The technology is more than capable, and as usual State Govt in the guise of RTA would love to make a cash cow of it. The fact that the data is not fully utilised and in most cases sails off into the ether does not mean that similar data cannot be utilised at a later date. Bracks has already had his paws at it, and Carr would be taxing off it to if he thought he could get it passed.

So don't discount the potential of these things to cost you big time, they do work and the RTA aren't interested in using them for safety, revenue thats another story.

If you smelt excrement there is probably something on your boots, dont get any on the carpet will you! :
