Ive been in Cairns since 94, Ive seen how Cairns has handled all of the other cyclones over the years, We felt pretty confident that our house could stand up to it. All we could do was open the roller door, clean up everything and hope it worked. We still dodged a bullet. I still think a new house could handle a cat 5.

I dont if this is b/s or what. was emailed to me today.

Some trivia about the moon.

The moon does an 18.6 year cycle.

A supermoon is a new or full moon which occurs when the moon is at 90% or greater of its closest perigee approach to earth.

An extreme supermoon is when the moon at new or full is at 100% or greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth.

1955 floods
There was an extreme supermoon at Full Moon on November 10 1954.
Flooding occured from October 1954 to 23 Feb 1955.

1974 floods (18 - 19 years later)
There was an extreme supermoon at Full Moon on January 8 1974.
3 weeks of rain up to 29/1/74.

1992 floods (18 - 19 years later)
There was an extreme supermoon at Full Moon on January 19 1992.

2011 floods (18 - 19 years later)
There are supermoons at full moon on 18/2/11, 19/3/11 and 18/4/11.
There is an extreme supermoon at Full Moon on 19/3/11.
There is predicted 6 -7 cyclones ????

g`day again

just got back home this arvo after a 21 day working tour of the " yasi region " with ergon energy . first week was spent around the Home Hill area repairing broken wires. even this far south there was a lot of tree and powerline damage.

then we moved on to Tully where the main storm hit.
some serious carnage up there with massive damage to forest, buildings, powerelines and crops, etc. hard to believe there were no serious injuries or deaths. some houses completly blown away ( nothing left except the floor) and some amazing stories from the locals.

Cardwell was a mess both from the wind and the storm surge.
i didnt get to the beach towns much but the other guys were talking about houses with the windows and doors smashed out and a metre of sand deposited through out the house.

from the cardwell range north there is hardly a tree intact , pine plantations completly flattened, rainforest look like skeletons with smashed trees and hardly a leaf left. the mountains look like they have been burntout.
as soon as we drove into Tully and looked at the mountain behind town you could see several waterfalls , later chatting to the locals that had lived there all their lives (50 -60 years) they were saying that they never knew the waterfalls were there because they had always been hidden in the rain forest.

Thanks Dave for coming up and helping us get our power back on.
Out of all the relief people that are supposed to be in the area from the Queensland government, cassowary coast council, red cross etc ergon energy was the only ones we saw or heard from here.
It took 16 days to get our power back on which is amazing as the damage in this area I was expecting 2 months.

i was glad to be able to help.
although i might not have personally hellped fix your particular section of the power network ,i was was just a small part of a large team of power workers ( i believe there was over 1000 of us) who came from all over qld and nsw to get things back in order.

we were told on monday morning that there was approx 2000 customers still without power but ergon hoped to have pretty much every house that was fit to be powered up back online by the end of the month. something i dont think anyone would have expected at the start.
there are a lot of homes, sheds, pumps, etc that need repairs before they can be reconected to the network. some may never reconect.
