Get into mining... a relative of mine is working for a company in the sales department and he gets $0.07 US per tonne that he sells ( plus a retainer of 75k a year ).. adds up when he has contracts for over 50 million tonnes each and has more than 20-30 active each year. And keeps getting it for the life of the contract.

The pay scale really needs to be revamped to be fairer to tradies. Why should a pleb in a factory be getting paid more ($24)than a hairdresser ($17) thats spent four years of their life doing an apprenticeship?

Back when I was an apprentice I had mates that were on the dole and others on austudy that were getting the same money that I was as a first year. This is totally wrong and a kick in the guts.

Its really evident these days as you cant get kids to be apprentices these days and earn $8 per hour when they can go out to Holdens as a pleb on the line and get $27 per hour.

except at holden they get fired 6 months later :P

Most school leavers that i knew left after they got their year 10 certificate and are still doin the same apprenticeship(all 4th years getting between 35-48k/year - the scania truck mechanic is the one gettin $48k - AND they get a free "training weekend" to melbourne where all they do is get hammered and sleep the hangover's off during the so called "training"

the main thing that put me off from doing an apprenticeship is the wage.

i'm almost finished my advanced diploma in international trade, while working at coles. i take home around $400 a week, which isn't bad considering i only work 20 hours a week. 14 hours are part time, meaning i'm on pretty average money.

a mate of mine is a fourth year taking home $750 a week. he busts his chops and is working on site, now tell me thats fair.
