In the 70's the mustang actually was smaller.

The 2nd Gen mustangs were built on the smaller pinto platform than the Falcon based 1st gen. Result was a mustang half a meter shorter and 1/4 tonne lighter.

Yeah, but it's a 2 tonne land yacht based on a decades old Merc platform that should have been replaced long ago, and would have been if FCA had any money to do it.

Surprisingly it still sells pretty well though.

Probably referring to the late 60's, early to mid 70's models that got a lot bigger than the original.

Those numbers are based on the final first gen models.

1964: 4613mm, 1109kg base
1967: 4663mm, 1251kg
1969: 4762mm, 1416kg
1971: 4813mm, 1615kg
1973: 4445mm, 1233kg.

Whether it was to accommodate the bigger engines or for other reasons, the Mustang was growing quickly and sharing less and less with it's Falcon base with each update.
