Agree with Ouyen and Mildura. Further south, there's a great bakery at Bridgewater on Loddon, and another at Moama. One at Maldon is pretty good too.

This is tricky. i have a thing for sausage rolls , so it gets difficult to rate a bakery overall that makes great pies ,but terrible snag rolls. i do have a few of - MUST STOP bakeries- when im on the road though .
all in VIC , no particular order.
as mentioned previously
Bridgewater on loddon, bakery , good allround, pies, sausage rolls , pastrys
Nagambie , good allround , pies .
Creswick, ok pies , Excellent sausage rolls
Woodend , good allround, pies, sausage rolls , pastrys - their vanilla slice is 10/10

Im also fond of a good sausage roll. However, there is a different criteria for pastry between eat in the car and not make a flakey mess, or eat sitting down where a flakey mess is no issue.

Since you brought up the subject of vanilla slices, did you realise that Ouyen used to hold an annual vanilla slice festival? I'm not sure if it still runs because a year or two ago it went to a different town and after that, the Mildura Council was seeking expressions of interest from other towns in the Mallee area to host the event.

Bourkies Bakehouse in Woodend in regional VIC does a vanilla slice that tastes like Jesus came in your mouth, it's mouthgasms.

You need to control those urges, it's not healthy

All good clean family food experiences here.

Apologies,
I'll keep things on the taste and texture path from now on.

I'm just going to wait to see how Cav responds to being asked if he likes his mouth pumped full of custard.

A bakery thread. My life is complete. Now I have a gripe!!! No where in this great state of Queensland can I get a bakery chocolate eclair that is as good as Victorian eclairs. This has been the bane of my existence since I moved from Victoria in 1975...

Buttercrumbs Bakery in Five Dock NSW (Sydney metro)

They don't do pies/sausage rolls or any of that sort but this place is hands down THE best for pastries. Been bakery obsessed for many a year and haven't found anywhere else that tops it.

Though having said that, they are a fairly new establishment, so time will tell whether they can deliver the goods consistently for years to come.

I always wonder about that place but as long as Drummoyne bake house is up the Road they will get my money

Drummoyne bakehouse is a good bakery, definitely has more options on top of the garden variety standards, but Buttercrumbs is next level pastry.

Give it a go when you're feeling adventurous and you won't be disappointed.

Can vouch for the Clarendon Bakery - I drive there rather than the closer Aberfoyle options.

Also, Becks Bakery at Pt Noarlunga and Meadows gets a thumbs up.

And I reckon the Espy Bakery at Christies Beach should be on this SA list in the making.
