Anyway, its a good problem to have, imagine what someone living in the 1890's would think. They had oil but didn't even know all its uses. imo there are many natural and renewable resources that we haven't realised the potential of.
Figure of speech...

Why not concentrate in alternate fuels for IC engines as well, instead of throwing a our eggs in one basket, especially when you put unrealistic deadlines onto it. Hydrogen ect.

Tesla Model 3 batteries have over 4x less cobalt than Volkswagen’s current cells

A report from German business newspaper Wirtschaftswoche has determined that Tesla’s batteries for the Model 3 have over four times less cobalt compared to those used by Volkswagen today, highlighting the long road ahead for traditional auto as it starts its shift towards electric vehicles.

Frank Blome, Head of the Center of Excellence for Battery Cells at Volkswagen, noted to the publication that the batteries for the Volkswagen I.D.3 (a car formerly dubbed the ID Neo) contain 12-14% cobalt. In comparison, Tesla has succeeded in reducing the cobalt content of the Model 3’s batteries to just 2.8% as of last year. Tesla has continued its battery research since then, hinting at even lower cobalt levels in the present iterations of its electric sedan.

Cobalt is one of the most controversial components of electric car batteries, partly due to the harrowing working conditions in some cobalt mines. This issue has caught the attention of veteran carmakers like BMW, which recently announced that it would not be purchasing any cobalt from the Republic of Congo, which holds some of the most scandalous cobalt mines in the world due to their use of child labor. The Volkswagen Group, for its part, has opted to release a set of strict guidelines for its suppliers, pledging to use only products that have a “clean” origin.

While the space between the cobalt content of Tesla and Volkswagen’s batteries remains prominent, Blome notes that the German carmaker is nonetheless pursuing improvements to its batteries, adding that the company’s next-generation cells are expected to have only half the cobalt content of its current batteries. “The prototype has a lower cobalt content. Our previous tests show that our quality standards are still met,” he said.

Tesla’s mastery in electric car batteries is among the company’s strongest advantages in the market. Having started its work on batteries for over a decade, Tesla is literally years ahead of the competition. A study from advisory firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence last year concluded that from the early days of the Model S to the Model 3, Tesla was able to reduce its cobalt consumption by an average of 59% per vehicle.

Elon Musk himself has noted that Tesla is aiming to reach a point where its batteries use almost no cobalt. The company explained this in its Q1 2018 Update Letter, where it highlighted the high energy density of the Model 3’s battery cells. “Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability. The cobalt content of our Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum cathode chemistry is already lower than next-generation cathodes that will be made by other cell producers with a Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt ratio of 8:1:1,” Tesla wrote.

So Tesla is almost to a point of no cobalt in their batteries.

How are we supposed to charge them?
Oh yeah...coal...or do we just wait for a sunny/windy day?

Turn on the a/c or lights now and the grid collapses...and at 12 hours a charge I would need to double the number of cars I have to give a 24 hour taxi service.

All this will make .00001% of a difference to the world's climate and send us all broke.

WTF are they thinking?

I think both fossil & electric will co exist until the full transition happens naturally, too many tax dollars to be thrown away by Canberra if it happens suddenly imo.

cheers, Maka

I imagine Australia running on electric cars would put significant extra load on our electricity grid (?)
It may be time to start building a couple nuclear power plants, or is there another answer (especially considering we'll probably double our population in the next few decades)?

Labour is against coal, against nuclear, but is all for electric cars as "clean".

As Jastel said, what, solar panels and wind turbines going to power everything, including charging massive grid batteries at night when people are home cooking, aircon for temperature control, PLUS charging electric cars.

If we do away with coal, sure solar has a fill in place, but a base power load needs to be met by something like Nuclear. Nuclear is used in Germany, France, etc- but Labour and the Greens will never engage with a nuanced objective scientific debate on the subject.

No such thing as a free lunch- where is the energy source going to come from to charge the electric cars at night etc.....

Norway electricity is 98% from renewable.

58% of new cars sold are EVS.

There are a few countries where electricity is 100% from renewables. (Albania, Iceland, and Paraguay)

Solar has actually helped out grid by reducing demand during summer peaks, and saving taxpayers billions by having to gold plate the grid by building more infrastructure during peaks.

Some isolated small towns have gone 100% off the grid with micro grids with solar wind.

Not difficult considering the available water there for hydropower, and that they started over 100 years ago.

Kmav you know Norway has a few months every year where the sun doesn't officially rise. I recon solar wouldn't work too well then.

They have also gone through severe price increases for their power recently and are expecting it to rise again. which might explain the desperate measures to go off grid.

Correction,
Labours motive is only to gain the sucker sheep votes nothing more nothing less to gain power, they have no idea how to run anything but commit us to spend more and more just to live, the kmav23's of the world are the parasites of the future human race, lord help the millennials for nothing will save them in the future when they realise they have been taken for a huge green ride of bs.

Funny how China Japan are looking to double their coal intake quoted on radio the other morning.

Norways power is mostly from hydro. There electricity prices have been one of the cheapest in Europe, recent price increases were due to lack of rainfall and increase in demand. They are usually an exporter of electricity, but imported Wind power from Sweeden and Denmark.

Ironically they have the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world 1 trillon dollars USD from their large oil reserves. They are one of one of the wealthiest countries per capita in the world.

If EVs sales are now 58%, they can easily ban all ICE cars by 2025.
