Correct there are other V8 RWD's on the market. But all priced $100K and above.

Flashback to 1981-82 when Ford were telling us we didn't need V8's anymore.....How wrong Ford were back then & Holden/GM are now! How many Ford owners/fans, purchased a V8 Commodore because Ford offered no V8 alternative after they killed the Clevo in 82? I was one......
Similar to what Ford did many years ago, I think we will see a change of heart from GM post 2017!!!

It's interesting how the two companies are taking a totally different approach. Mustang is a truly global car while The GM's are LHD only. Someone hasn't don't their sums correctly and I can guess which one.

This is just a ploy to make sure every single VFII V8 is sold.

Sales of VFII will go up because of this.

Nice way to make sure you get rid of all your stock.

Different world back then though Rob and the Falcon was still capable of taking a V8, Holden won't have anything that would take a V8 so i'm not sure they will have a change of heart.

As for unloading stock, I would have thought Holden moved to the JIT/Kanban process many years ago so won't have much stock. Agree though, it could be a dastardly ploy to move product but i'm betting it isn't ;-)

Hi. I wonder if holden will back down on this and do something like ford just to have a V8 to get people into the showrooms. People as old as me (and some a little younger) might recall wheels magazine (& street machine) in 1984 having the "V8 till 98" campaign because GM said the V8 wasnt wanted. Cheers MD

A bit left field, but it might be GM's way of ridding itself of the Holden name by making it less appealing. 'No sir, you can't have a Holden V8 anymore, but when we switch to the Chevrolet nameplate we might start selling them again in the future'.

This is just preparing the market for no rwd v8 period. Corvette won't have a solid business case and there is no v8 insignia coming.

Just usual holden bs spin.

I didn't say GM products would be called a Holden, just sold in the same dealerships. You know, kind of Jag and Landrover. Holden dealerships have the GM logo so I can't see an issue. If they sell the Camaro then there still is a V8 offered as an alternative to the Mustang.

Who cares what SAAB did, they were a failure when GM took over and did what Ford did to Jag and Daimler did to Chrysler, stripped them bare and let them rot with the left overs.

I do not understand modern business.
Lets delete the biggest seller in our range.
Like seriously what do these people smoke.
Does somebody leave the engines running in their factories too long with inadequate ventilation or something.

It's about making money rather than big sales figures Cyber. Holden have said they are making a loss on the Commodore and I believe Ford are breaking even in their lower Falcon/Territory sales - someone may know more on the latter?

I would have thought the reasoning for the demise of V8 powered Holdens is most likely nothing more than simple economics.

Holden in its modern era has traditionally sourced and/or sought inspiration for its models from Asia and Europe and not from the USA.

That would say to me that those regions provide a better business case for importing vehicles than that of the US.

Now that the Commodore and local manufacturing is dead why wouldn’t they continue to source from those markets?

As those markets are not V8 originated, Holden can’t source one from them for the Aussies.

GM in the US isn’t prepared to produce RHD vehicles for this market.

Again possibly because the business case doesn’t add up.

I’m one of those traditional V8 buyers that will now turn away from Holden but I do wonder how many other sales they’ll lose because of the likes of me when you see that the bulk of vehicles sold here are not V8 powered.

It’s a gamble for sure but it may not be as big a one as someone with a traditional V8 performance enthusiast outlook may think.

I’m old enough to remember when turbo cars were scoffed at here and in particular by the V8 crowd and now look how they dominate.

Before I know it I will probably be getting blown away by Opel sourced turbo fours and sixes.

Holden may simply be gambling on moving with the times.

For 'old stick in the muds' like me, we’ll be hunting around for someone to provide us with a reasonably priced V8 and for some of us the 2 door Mustang may not even be the practical solution we're after.

Chrysler may end up being the big winner of a small market.

Which one?

The majority of countries in the world are LHD, the majority of RHD countries have little demand for a sub $100k affordable RWD V8. I would expect GM have done the sums and it may not be viable.

Whilst I think it's fantastic the Mustang is coming to Aus, it won't be a consistently big seller.

If Australia was LHD, it would be a very different scenario....

Ford wouldn't have done it if there wasn't a decent ROI to be had. Maybe brand Mustang has a bigger global reach than Camaro does?

Mustang is not replacing the Falcon so neither Commodore or Falcon successors will have a V8 option. Holden is GM - many GM cars will continue with V8 engines and some might even find a way to Australia.

Given the nature of motoring journo's in this country, how long after the demise of the V8 in a Holden will they start in on Ford and others along the line of 'V8's are relics and no longer a viable performance option?

I can already imagine the comparison write ups. 'While the Mustang out performs, out handles, has a better braking, ergonomics and generally better looking, we'd prefer the eco friendly Holden Malibu'.

Absolutely. Mustang is globally iconic, even the Transfomers films haven't raised Camaro's status to that of Mustang.

interesting comment. for years in AUS it's been all about Holden "Australia's own" where in reality the Falcon is more Australian via content. now that there is no Holden car what are the motoring writers going to do? All the Holden boys? A Ford has always been a Ford but now Holden is just a badge. Cant wait, while enjoying my FG-X XR8 and Mustang
