Ive heard with the low powered laptops you should use XP because vista takes up too much space.

i bought a desktop a few months ago and just go XP with it.

No problems here with Vista. My computer is custom built and up to standard required by Vista. As to office 2007, I love it, I think it is leaps and bounds ahead of office XP. So easy to use once you know where everything is. Making powerpoint presentations takes around half the time it took in XP.

Basically Vista is a result of the fact that you can't have it both ways. Sure drivers and programs from older OSes could be compatible, but if you want something which is more secure than the outgoing model, then you have to draw a line in the sand and say "this is how things will be done from now on" the same goes for the way some settings are accessed and changed.

Microsoft is catering for a huge slice of the market and can't afford some of the luxuries smaller companies have in terms of not supporting legacy devices & formats any longer which is why things end up so big.

In terms of it chewing up too much in the way of resources, well thats a way to make the system more responsive, 1gb of ram as a "minimum" really shouldn't trouble too many people these days, ram is cheap, we're not back in the mid 90's where a few meg would cost you the better part of $1000.

These days it seems that the majority of Microsoft bashing is done because old habits die hard rather than any genuine reason for the angst that seems to flow forth from the masses

i havnt had vista on my machine in over 6 months now ( i think) and i didnt enjoy my experience. there was almost no drivers. my sound blaster extigy external 5.1 sound card didnt work even on the new drivers so i had no sound, my printer (brother MFC) wouldnt even install using the new drivers. it got part way through the instillation and whne it asked you to plug the printer in it sat there looking at me for hours with no result... xp had it installed within 5 minutes.

i think once drivers are done and upgraded from the current vista versions they will work no problems and vista will be awesome.

it is a shame that it takes up soo much space and ram.

my old machine was a 2.4 P4 with a gig of ram and i ran vista on it and timed it from the second i hit the restart button in windows till it was fully rebooted and back into windows. it took 6 minutes 20 seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i done the exact same test a day later on XP (same machine - same hardware/software) and it rebooted in under 30 seconds... 28 to be exact lol

just the physical booting of the system takes longer. wasnt really an issue with me as my machine stayed on 24/7 but when programs froze and needed rebooting it took forever.

im willing to give vista another go but i need to spend 70 bucks on my computer and get 2 gig of ram before ill even consider it again.

Lots of Vista bashing.. re: the differences in doing things well thats development and I think its just that some of you just don't like change.

I have run XP and Vista on a number of machines.

My old P4 2.4, 512MB RAM booted Vista in about the same time as XP.. so something is seriously wrong with your hardware if it is taking over 6 mins..

In saying that I wouldnt seriously expect it to be able to run well on such an old machine (going on 5 years old now), or expect it to run obsqure software that originally run on Win9x or even older.

Driver issues are a hardware manufacturers problem really, eg. My iMac and MacBook both run Vista perfectly since all drivers were developed properly.

Ideally MS should just cut their losses and start over like Apple did with OS X.. Offer a sandboxed VM mode for compatability with old software if they like but start fresh with the rest of the OS.

Vista isnt that bad no worse than XP IMO.. though it could have been much better.

In saying all that I still much prefer using OSX

I remember Bill Gates proclaiming that Microsoft 3.1 was the best OS in the world forever.
If I remember correctly, we had all these similar dealings with going from 98 to XP.

Being involved with the beta testing phase, I was very pro Vista for 6 months. But regular niggling crashes and the general slowing effect on my P4 3ghz system forced me back to XP. I purchased a new copy of XP Pro, and reverted a few days ago. Much better system performace now. Ahhhhhhh.

Anyone want to buy a used copy of Vista Ultimate?

P.S. Having run Vista on my machine built for XP, I found most of my games ran slower, particular in high movement scenes. I know that my Geforce 6600GT is ageing, but vista pushes the limits of it, and slows my games.

'98 tp XP was a little taxing by comparison, but I think Vista outweighs that effect. Pardon the pun.

I will second its rubbish , alot of hardware still doesn't even work with the recommended vista updates for that particular piece of hardware. I gave it about a week, then uninstalled it and put xp pro back on again , then turfed vista in the bin !.

My sis just bought a new Toshiba with Vista.

I'm not a fan to be honest. I would expect it to be similar in look to the previous versions (bit like Nokia phone menu's), but with better performance, and of course more options should people want them.

The file / folder viewing is not easy to follow, and I tried to do do a basic function like copy some mp3 files off a cd to her computer, and I kept getting an error saying that I was missing a file in word?.. now what Word has to do with moving mp3 files is beyond me...

Bit like the new hotmail format to be honest. Heaps of people hate the new look, but I guess after 6 months people with Vista won't even remember what XP looked like.

However i'll be staying with XP for now.

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista and had many problems.

Well where do I start with my Vista problems:

*Wireless dissconected for no reason and the only way to fix it was to restart the computer.

*Slow to open any type of windows.

*Would reset and bring up the dreaded "blue screen of death" for no reason.

*DVD software I use to record TV didnt work properly.

I just changed back to XP and have had no problems at all.

I remember my first computer was a Pentium 200mhz with 32mb of SDRAM, a 2mb Video card and 2gb Quantum HDD, Installing Windows was a 3 hour job and 10 years ago when I got it, It was considered a big deal.

Now days Video card processors are 800mhz and can calculate 500 000 trillion pixels in 1/5 of a second.

Computer's have evolved at an astonishing compounding rate, its almost scary, it makes you wonder how advanced they will be in the next 10-20 years and what new roles they will play in Society.

Was the Terminator series just entertainment or a Vision into the future ?

This is like a time warp from 2000 - XP and all the bleating that went with that.
I have had Vista Business 64 on my main PC since about a month after launch. It's different.. it is harder on the hardware but it's fine. The only thing I had issues with was the audio card and eventually that sorted itself out too. I think 1 gig RAM is minimum, luckily it's cheap.
I run Ubuntu on an old laptop and Xp on this one and I don't have any problems with any of them. People need to embrace the change, it's going to happen anyway.

I find it to be ok, XP was better IMO, but only cause i was used to using it.

I only have two real problems at the moment.
1. One of my RAM sticks died, so its running a little slow.
2. Media Player 11 sounds like its under water after about 10-15mins of use.

I'm another Pro Vista.

I've had it and I make sure I argue constantly with anyone that tells me they've been told not to get Vista from somebody 'in the know'

Obviously they don't know .

I've had no problems finding drivers for anything, I haven't had 1 item not work due to hardware or software problems. It's not slow. It's the same to navigate as XP, the only thing that I've noticed is different is the Network Center, which I think is a good step compared to XP's labrynth.

Network and File Sharing gets a bit hairy but thats easily sorted.

Office 07 is a life saver for me, the only thing I'm not a fan of there is that nobody has 07 compatible MS offices around the place, everyone is still using 97-2003 format and everytime I save my work it has to be in that format, otherwise I turn up to work to open something and realise I have to go back home and re-save the copy.

But, with the way it displays everything, font changes, format changes, GRAPHS! the way it shows your graphs is a huge improvement, instead of going hmm I wonder what this would look like, drag your mouse across it and boom, there it is.. Displayed.

Vista and Office 07 - Do it.

well i have already ran into some issues...

FOR VISTA:
all my drivers apart from printer was installed
install was alot smoother this time around.
colours and fonts are great
AVG and other anti-virus programs more readily available
the little graph that tells you how full your HDD's are.. its cool

AGAINST VISTA:
wireless dropouts
wireless signal full strength yet windows said i was out of range.. WHAT THE!!!
file sharing... ok so i clicked the option to share it in the network but then you have another option for a closed network or some crap than you need to do otherwise no file will be shared... whats the point of the first one.

as i mentioned nothing major apart from the wireless... last night it dropped out every few seconds...

Mine was doing this daily a few weeks back. I rang tech support (Belkin) and it was the duration of the session timeout from memory which was changed in the wireless modem page

Although if I leave the PC on all day it will disconnect from the internet, even though the connection is fine on the laptop. I have to restart the computer to get the connection back

no problems with vista for me. it came with my laptop, dual core amd with 1gb memory. close the laptop and it suspends the session, open it up, hit power and its up and running in 20seconds. on xp it used to take forever to start it up etc. i like the little visual things with vista as well. i love the option to use a flash drive as extra ram. makes a huge difference when my 2gb flash is plugged in.

i use wireless alot when i'm at school, no issues at all. even at home. it picks up the neighbours wireless as well lol

then last but not least the CD drive stops working, light flashed but wouldnt eject... rebooted 3 times hitting the button just after boot up and right through and still nothing.

yay vista
