Teen flicks........

.....I have a 13 year old daughter that speaks like that consistantly. Movies like 'Bring it on', 'Mean girls', 'Confessions of a teenage drama queen', and crap like that. It teaches them to cease all electrical activity in thier yet undeveloped brain.

Mind you I get a lot of Americans listen to my live radio shows because they really love the accent, and Aussies living overseas because they miss the accent. One Canadian woman told me on a live chat that she loves to wake up to the sound of my voice :

It worries me when I see young kids speaking with a strong american accent.. really gets up my nose. Its these tickle-me-elmo toys that do it I reckon.

EDIT: Oh, count me in as a bogan too! I'd rather be a bogan than an american teenybopper type.

This is result of too much VB and too many bongs. It scares me that these people actually know how to use a computer.

Always a guaranteed laugh there, except for those who sign up and reckon they'll fit in because they put multiple swear words in their posts. The true bogans definately show through though, it may be exaggerated but I know heaps of blokes that talk like that all the time!

Our accent is a conglomerate of British English and Cockney. Pretty much, the first generation of Australian born had a very distinct accent, majority of it being Cockney. USELESS FACT!

But look, i'm all for the Aussie way.
We work hard, play hard and rest just as much. I'm not having a go at anyone, but I don't care how you speak, what accent you have, if you can work, play and rest hard, sink a few COLD beers, enjoy doing sweet F.A on the weekends, you're aussie enough for me.

Hearing a Yank, Brit, Asian and even and Indian or Pakistani over here reminds me of one thing, Australia is great enough to have these people and for them to want to be here.

We live in a country that is wowed by a mint XB GT or a nice HX Monaro more than we are wowed by lambos, ferraris and porsches. With all the crud of kids speaking this word or that word, it is true, they grow out of it. I never really spoke in such a manner, i was brought up to be proud of my accent (Grandfather was a born n bred Mildura boy).

To finish of my little story of war and peace, i have to say.
I drive a ute, not a truck. I wear an akubra, not a cowboy hat.
I wear stubbies, blunnies and explorer socks.
I drink VB, Crownies and Carlton Draught.
I have a shed, a big shed, not a garage.
I love telling bullshit stories to my mates, and them and me both know it's the classic "fishing" story, "...This big!"

My back yard is mildly overgrown, i wake up to kookaburras. Cockatoos p!ss me off with their screeching. I walk around topless and barefoot on hot days and no one makes me feel like i'm lesser of a person.

My wife's parent boths come from china. My wife looks chinese. She was born in Darwin. I thought i was true ocker aussie, until i met her. She speaks like i do, yet she also speaks almost perfect chinese. She is aussie. She works harder, plays harder.

She is not my wife because we stood in front of a minister and said, I do. She is not my wife because we signed a bit of paper. She is my wife because we both say so. People accept that, because it's good enough. That's what makes Australia, Australia.

What makes australia is not the way we speak... it is what we do that makes aussie.

The girls were self-concious about their voice, when they're out in public they 'put on' the voice, imitating chicks they perceive as 'kewl'. More Aussie chicks should towk loike Effie, ya reckon?

I think its worse in the eastern states. I met some victorians a few weeks back and they refused to believe that I was born in Australia. "But you have an accent! You must be from England or something!"

Nope. Never left this country, sunshine.

I don't think any place is the same today as it was in the 70s and 80s, even America has become more globalized, we are doing the same, so is China, UK etc. To want to live in a little bubble, and not have influence on and from any other place is the exact thing a lot of Aussies accuse Yanks of being guilty of.

4.9 EF Futura, that would have to be one of the dumbest most simplisitic arrogant views i have ever heard of in my life, i completely agree with XWGS351, the way that young kids talk, albeit it young teens or even younger is appauling. i just wanna slap some people when they try to be something they are not. why not be Australian and embrace our culture, be Australian, buy a V8 and eat steak

Quite a few things irritate me about the direction our spoken language is taking.

My biggest Hate is A S S. If you are describing the posterior of a human rather than a pack ungulate, then odds-on you'll incur my wrath. It's A R S E. Simple as that, regardless of what this stupid Firefox spell-check says.

If you're interested in the true Australian 'language' find out about Strine, it's quite interesting as you can see the bastardisation of High English (spoken now only in the North Shore) over the time particularly by the Irish and also the Cockney's.

They're kids. They use words including "like" and "y'know". They'll also grow out of it when they mature a bit more and realise how silly it sounds.

For all you know, these girls are university educated or working their way to a trade. But... you jump in and brand them brainless twats. Way to judge a book by it's cover champ.

This really is pathetic. Of all the petty moral crusades ive seen launched on these forums, this has to be the most pointless of them all.

So, in a similar vein, Subway is a very american franchise. You seem to be scared sh*tless of American culture, but you obviously support the americanisation of our food and ever increasing presence of fast food in our diets. But that's ok, because 'you know best', right???

See - i can jump to ridiculous conclusions as well.
Well I don't know about jumping to ridiculous conclusions( LOL.Not everyone jumps as high as you) All I can say is that it's quite evident with all the American Culture,Custom and Yank accents slammed into us every day that we are picking up more and more of this shlt. Wake up kids we are aussies not sheep..I for one will never loose my aussie identity/outlook..Rave End..

Please, define Australian. I'm interested to know what it is.

Who do you mean?
Australian Aborigine?
High English Free Settler?
Cockney Convict?
Remittance Man Grazier?
Scottish Peasant Cockie?
Chinese Gold Miner?
German Lutheran Refugee?
Afghan Trader?
Macassan Traders?
Ten Pound Poms?
Populate or Perish New Australian's?
Vietnamese Refugees?
Some curious amalgam of them all?

What is the archetypal Australian? What is this 'Australian' culture we should be embracing?
