Hmm, Im looking at this thread title and then at my own post count but the answer for me is 'no' (I hope you guys agree).
I always try to make sure im not just crapping on in posts, admittedly there have been some things i probably didnt need to post but did anyway :hihi:, the explanation for my high count is that I just spend a lot of time on here each day when i dont have anything else to do, and I like to learn as much as i can.

i dont really care if we do or dont have a post count shown publically but i know a few do. my suggestion is that the WHORES of the site (everyone knows who they are) have THEIR post count removed because of the whoring. its plainly obvious with certain threads that a ridiculous amount of posts in one topic by one person ISNT neccesary.
basically if your a serial offender your post count gets removed. |

go have a look in the show and shine section for example and you will see what im talking about. sure its good to say how great someones car is or whatever but a hell of a lot of certain posts by certain people could have been done through the PM system as they dont really have much to do with the topic. alot are just continued conversations as if they were on MSN or something. i hope i have explained it better. |

I played 'The Song Title Game' for quite some time, until it got off-track once too often, and I got sick of people posting whatever came to mind, just to keep it going, so I stopped. I've also posted in 'What Are You Listening To', but that was soley to promote my internet radio station. I do see, however, that many use these threads as a way of boosting their count, as theymay see it as some kind of social status. That is something you may never stop. Personally, I keep forgetting that the post count is there, as I don't generraly look there, except for the username of whoever posted in, or created a thread.

yea but quasi, the posts in the bar do not go towards your posts total. Thats the idea there so the whores cant get their post count up by posting total nothing ness. I like having the post counts there. In my opinion thats how i tell how active the users are and how often they are on etc. for all the post whores out there, who cares, it dosnt make them better then everyone else. Just my 2c

The most valid argument for a post count is the "for sale" section. Obviously, if someone has a few hundred posts and sells something its more likely to be a "safe" transaction. Someone with 1 post....less likely.
Apart from that, I dont really care about them that much.

Perhaps threads could be automatically locked after a certain time, say 1 month after the last post in it? Oh, and while we're at it, I wouldn't consider myself a post whore...

I think post counts are a good thing, as Casper said in the For Sale section but also in the tech sections of the board. People with a higher post count often (not always, but often) are the guys to listen to. There's alot of misinformation that gets spread around tech forums it's sometimes hard to tell who to listen to.

There's a feature on LS1.com.au where certain people are assigned '1st level technical poster' status, and i think there are other status' you can get too. Not exactly sure how the system works - i have a feeling it's based on ratings from other forum members. Maybe our mods should have a chat to the ls1 boys (well..i'm sure they do already!) and see how/if it works for them (...again....they probably have already!)
If a system like that worked, it'd be far handier than a simple post counter. |

I often look at mine, and wish it was bigger (postcount)
I rarely whore, but often do post off-topic (I am kind of a six-degrees-of-separation poster). I aim to post things that are relative to the thread at hand... such as this one (which is a blend of all three: whoring, off topic AND on topic!) -Dave- +1oneoneone |

I also use the post count when looking at events being organised. I feel more comfortable knowing an event is organised by someone from within the fold. Whereas I often wonder about people who come on to publicise an event and we never hear from them again. The count can help, but not necessarily provide a definitive answer as to their Bona Fides.
I do not think a high post count means a person knows what they are talking about. If you take the time to get to know other members then you will know whose posts are worth reading, which post should be glanced over and whose should be ignored. There is also a built in feature in this forum that you should consider using if you don't want to read some members posts. Use the ignore list and you will no longer have to read their posts. With their name in your ignore list their posts will no longer cause you distress because you will no longer see them (except if someone who is not on your ignore list quotes them). Regards Steven
