Sorry to hijack, but WTF??? You guys realise the southern cross is on a bunch of countries flags and visible to the southern hemisphere, as in half the world? About as uniquely austalian as swiss cheese??? Each new entrant to this cross phase is just another notch against basic CDF. I'm as patriotic as they come but the whole thing annoys the bejeesus outta me.

Whilst you are correct about everyone in the southern hemisphere being able to see it, the southern cross is usually associated with Australia. Also there are only a few (Samoa and Papua New Guinea) that also have the southern cross and are not apart of Australia (Christmas Island), its not like there are heaps.

That would be an awesome tatt. I'm not one for getting tatts just for sake of having picture. I have an eagle which represents the passing of my mother and I have my own design of an armband incorporating my partner and her kids (after 15 years).

I only get a tatt if it represents something meaningful in my life that will never change (i.e. no girlfriends names or Casper the friendly ghost type of crap).

Brendan. 3 years planning shows that you're very meticulous in what you want (or you procrastinate) and I think that tatt would look terrific across a well defined back.

Just don't get all fat and saggy or the distortion will ruin it - worth keeping in mind that as we age, the body shape can change and alter the tatt considerably.

Why not promote the things that make australia famous on your tatt? Maybe get a panorama across your back?

Crocodile Dundee hugging Ivan Milat, with the beaumont kids playing in a wading pool in the background, Bradley Murdoch can run the BBQ, Kerry Packer can be hovering around Rupert Murdochs Kidneys, whos playing cards with Lindy Chamberlin.

Bonza!

I got the Southern Cross on my back - right shoulder before Xmas.

I have a Rose on my back - Left Shoulder, a love heart with hubbys name underneath on my other ankle and some tattoo's that only hubby can see. Love tattooes!!! Absolutely love getting them and love seeing people with them!

My brother in law has thong straps tattooed on the top of his feet...can't get more Aussie than that!

Next one I am going to get is on my lower back...just above me butt saying...Wrong way back out.

Technically illegal to reproduce the coat of arms without premission. But you get that on big jobs.

Papua new guinea, new zealand, samoa, brazil. All reference a southern cross upon there national flag, plus a few other countries of south america that use it for lesser regions. It is pure ignorance to think that the southern cross expresses belonging to australia alone. A sad commentary on the intelligence of our nation...

Have been thinking about a tattoo fro a wile now, nothing too big. Thinking about a Bull scull (Kinda RM Williams style) or the Ford style Cobra snake on the side of my arm.

Bull-Scull> As I love the Aussie outback and that is kinda like the unofficial Logo of everything Outback

Cobra> Think it would look sweet and ties in nicely with my Love of Ford's.

After a few beers one Arvo with a mate who is also thinking of a getting a Tat, we were talking about stupid tats to get and I almost went and got this done on the side of my arm LOL

Why not use the southern cross? I have one I know its not purely Australian but it is a symbol of Aus and thats what its all about isnt it? I don't know why you are getting all high and mighty about it!!

JUST MY OPINION:

I bloody love this country. Love Australia and everything she holds. BUT. The southern cross tattoo is so damn common these days. Its great that everyone is showing there national pride but I look at tattoos as if 4 million other people have them its not very individual is it?

I was thinking about getting the southern cross but then I thought about it. Lots around and like an ********. Everyones got one.
My thoughts if you really want the southern cross get it. BUT a good way to do it is to incorporate it into something. Get a few aussie things or put it with your family crest or something else that means alot. EG Ned Kelly or something.

I have a big tattoo planned that would cover a lot of my back and come down onto my triceps. Would be a big tattoo to get so Im sitting on it for awhile. Seeing if I still like it in months/year to come. Would also be my first haha
But I change my mind a fair bit so It will probably go out the window at some stage

awesome! hehe you will need to wait that long, saving to afford it. For custom work, i think the going rate is usually $150-$200

cheers

I dont see the purpose of getting a Ned kelly Tattoo, he was a criminal for gods sake, hes made to ber a hero when he isnt. Southern cross is a much better option for poeple wanting to get an aussie tattoo even if it is common.

Thats my opinion anyway..

Yeah i know the cross is common these days, but i plan to add to it. Basically making my back a tribute to this great country. I was after other peoples ideas as to what they have to not steal them but incorperate them into mine.
