 Got this at Pickles Melbourne last week for my son, 2008 3.2lt Turbo Diesel, 39ks, a bit of wet carpet. $24,000 with full service history. This is the third "flood damaged vehicle" I have bought. Never had a problem with any of them...........

Hi there, first post..so be kind please!....I have been an observer of this forum for a while, and have seen all the pro's/con's over buying a repairable write-off. I have bought one (a 2010 Focus LX), that had water just enter it over the door sills. I throughly went over the car before i bought it as there is only one low lying sensor in the car, I made the offer and have gone through the process to put it back on the road (after drying it out and replacing sound-deadenig felt). Car flew through VIV and Rego at VicRoads.....
Moral of the story????.....some flooded cars are definiley worth while getting back on the road...just have to be careful in what degree of flooding. As has been mentioned earlier, it looks like any water in the cabin, is an automatic write-off. Low level flooded cars can be a real bargin to look at.....I have a 12 month old car that owes me $9K.... |

I heard a story about a guy that removed the b-pillar plastic seat belt covering panel to ascertain what the interior water level was.

It's happened before.
Waaaay back in the early eighties there was a flood in Nambour and the Ford dealer sold cars cheap that had been underwater. They had been cleaned up, engine, gearbox and diff all flushed and cleaned up. A guy down the road from my parents house bought a brand new XE Fairmont for something like $6000, less than half price at the time. They were sold without any warrantee, as is, but registered. He stripped out the interior and cleaned them all up in the yard...I still remember driving past and seeing the car with everything pulled out and sitting in the sun after being pressure washed and shampooed to buggery. He also went through as much of the wiring loom as he could and contact cleaned everything and did it all with WD40. He had that car for another six or seven years, then sold it. No idea what the rust situation was like. I don't know about touching a modern computer-filled car after it's been submerged though...
