LandCruiser and GC are not competitors - one is a heavy duty 4wd and the other is unibody car with extra ground clearance . GC drives well , so it should as it is based on Merc ML class ...

They're competitors if customers cross-shop them, I'd be considering all my options if I wanted a 4x4. They're towing capacities are the same, they both have V8 and diesel options, dual range transfer case. I don't see how you can call the LC200 "heavy duty." These are all light-duty.

I have 50k on my 14 jeep grand cherokee. its no worse than any other car for little warranty issues. most of the recalls have been for trivial crap.

bigest issues were - rear shock mounts has taken jeep about 5 years to address this fault (I have been waiting 12 months) affected cars world wide. slight knocking sound is the issue. cruise control was flaky (needs a firmware update next trip to the dealer). Sat nav is schite as most are although jeeps seem to have no interest in fixing aus versions (no speed camera alerts and many features they say it had dont work - but minor stuff once again).

the biggest issue is dealer service. but as i am coming from ford I am used to it. On this car i have done my own service from day one and documented everything including photos. if there is ever a major comonent failure I will fight for warranty. I also did this with ford (never had a issue). makes the car owning experience a lot more pleasant.

but i know of how a lot of jeep customers were treated in the past - the issues were a lot worse and they would basically give you a big FU. Hell, even their phone number was an effort to track down. there has been quite a few civil cases and more than one car returned - must have been cheaper than actually fixing the problems.

but in the end the car is great - bloody fantastic actually.

Landcruiser is heavy duty compared to GC - body on chassis vs unibody design , understressed diesel engine - tow capacity is the same on paper - in reality GC is best suited for up to 2.5 t. Lastly they are not in the same price bracket ...

I looked at the land cruiser and its a car for the bush.

I live in the bush and i still went the jeep. running costs are a fraction of the LC and it is a much better driver (handling and performance). I also regularly tow over 3 ton in my jeep and i got to say it does it soooo easy (vm diesel and 8 speed zf box is a dream). If i lived in cooperpeady i would get the LC but any where else I would get the GC. I have had about 4 people i know with LC switch to jeep after they rode in mine. Even the off road stuff is good enough for 99% of bushies (tyres would make way more difference)

long term we'll see how it does but the new LC arnt without their issues.

The funniest thing to do when i give people a lift is boot it from the lights - they cant believe how quick it is (for a diesel especially) - always funny

i spoke to a bloke on his fifth land cruiser a few weeks ago, he tows a tandem loaded down daily, and the way he spoke , when the time comes his next replacement will be another land cruiser, edit, a car company has to be doing something right to get that sort of repeat customer.

I think Jeep/Fiat did a pretty smart thing moving the JGC to the Merc ML platform.

There was a very small margin that needed the Rugged 4WD. but from what I've read it still performs very well off road using electronics air suspension etc.

from what I've seen there are far more ticks for the Jeep since Fiat took them over than crosses, you can only laugh at some peoples comments, which are similar to biased Political views

as far as customer service goes, I can sort of see why, as they must have grown in Australia so quickly. everyone would have been back pedalling to keep up.
IMO they will only get better.

Speaking on my sons behalf their after sales service [ prominent dealership just south of Adelaide CBD] is ABSOLUTE CRAP !!! Have for the whole term of buying the car with extended warranty been screwed around with items not being fixed and having to return car for completion of work the next day Problem is that is a 200km return trip. Has cost him THOUSANDS in lost time and driven him insane!!! Screw you Jeep, you are **** with your service. It is also a Ford dealership, so I guess that explains it.

My 2014 GC CRD has nearly clocked up 50K....

Being one of the first of the 2014 models in the country it has had its fair share of recalls, only one has rendered it undrivable with the dealer going above & beyond to get a replacement vehicle with matching towing capacity not to stuff up our holidays (it was fixed without needing the vehicle)

I think it comes down to the actual dealership & more importantly the service team, ....most recalls are taken care of during its routine service & always a loan car is offered

The vast majority of recalls have been with the electronics, the last fault mine experienced was a recall in the states that he didnt even know about yet, the same air bag error that Ford had due to the Bosch module

it does come down to what you pay for & you do get a fair bit when compared to others in the same class

I'm happy with mine, never thought I would be, the few issues yes have been a pain but the diesels power is great for towing & does shock a few when needed - the SRT8's are just god damm scary quick lol

I think when it comes to Jeep ownership, what really compares to a GC diesel, for features?. 170+kW diesel V6, 8 speed ZF auto, looks good (IMO), very well optioned. It's a tempting prospect on paper. Prado, mux, Colorado 7, all very bare bones compared to a GC, (on paper).

I drove all 3 engine variations of WK2 GC when it was released - it was pretty obvious to me that this was a watershed car for Jeep in Australia. Good looking with right engines and nice interior - up to date with tech gadgets too.
I knew it was going to sell well and it has gone past Prado which was the leader in the segment. I didn't buy one as wasn't sure about Jeep ownership prospects and went with dual cab diesel with similar power/torque.
So , yes it is a leader in the segment , good value and good Car - if it was built by Toyota it would sell 5x of what is selling now.

It's not heavy duty. I don't even call my F150 heavy duty and it will pull about 4.5 tonnes. It's body-on-frame too, but then so is the Jeep Wrangler. That's definitely not heavy duty, though it is a capable off-roader. I would say older Land Cruisers like the 60 series are "rugged" but still not heavy duty. The new ones aren't even rugged anymore.

I have a 200 series TTD V8 Landcruiser. I tow at 3tonne caravan. Its 2 years old now, and I was looking at replacing it with a Jeep, either one of the top end diesel's or the SRT8.

I have a few mates who have the Jeep and they all said I would be crazy to sell the Landcruiser for a jeep. They all seem to think the jeep is a car that won't last the distance, and not as capable at the Landcruiser. This is coming from Jeep owners...

Its my third Landcruiser, had a 2000 100 series with the Straight 6, then a 2004 Petrol v8, and now looks like i'll have a fourth. Never had a problem with any of them, and Toyota service is second to none!!

Yeah sure the jeep has lots of bells and whistles, but once you get past that, I can't really see where it is better than a landcruiser.

And yes the SRT8 is fast, but i'm not looking for speed when I tow my caravan... Got the new XR8 to have some fun in when I want.

It would be interesting to see how many Landcruisers Toyota would sell if it was priced the same as the Jeep.

It is a cultural difference - Heavy Duty has a different meaning in the US of A where you get much bigger choice of large vehicles compared to what's on offer here (aftermarket conversions excepted) . So , in OZ 200 series LC is top of the food chain and heavy duty compared to Jeep GC.

Hardly ever see a Jeep GC in what I'd call off-road, or a Mercedes or Range Rover/Discover. I think these vehicles are for the metrosexual wanna be types, applying spray on mud to look "cool".

When I go off-road, I do see lots and lots of Land Cruisers, Patrols and Hi-Lux, BT50, Rangers and Amrock are quite often spotted. Likewise on the mines, it is 95% Toyota's.

Getting back to the OP, I think Jeep needs to review the pricing for their spare parts, as it would be difficult to justify their prices, for example, $350 for a replacement HID bulb!

Who in their right mind would buy a 2nd hand Jeep knowing the price of its spare parts?

I wouldn't buy any of them for serious off-road, I'd buy an older Jeep or something and modify it so it's cheap, capable, and I won't care about beating it up. In fact, that's what I am going to do...get a 1998-2000 XJ Cherokee. A friend of mine did it, and it shows up modified $50,000 Rubicons. Not bad for a $500-1000 investment! A new Grand Cherokee is something I would buy for my wife to drive around town and take on road trips.

But you do realise now they are not building these cars for the small percentage of people who want to take them off road.
so I think your criticism is missing its mark,
Luxury SUV are selling in great numbers, but not because people want to get them muddy

That was an impressive video, the bloke obviously wanted to convey his heart felt emotions to Jeep/fiat, and nice video composition the way they sporadically played the jeep song .
