Just ask "How much does it cost to maintain your VW mate?"

Usually shuts them up.

If not, then a small history lesson on VW will make a Fascist out em hahaha.

Thanks for your fantastic comments. The car I was driving was an FG XR6, but I have a few Fords. I feel very reassured after reading your comments which were all spot on. I must say I thought jimt3te50's comment very appropriate "ask him what he drives when he'e not driving his husband's car".

Doesn't have to be taken as an insult as such.

Dinosaurs were large and powerful grunting beasts, which became extinct.

Falcons are also large & powerful grunting beasts, which are about to become extinct.

I'd say "Mate... when your car grows up it wants to be a Falcon... it's only people like you, holding it back !"

Then, if he goes to walk off, I'd say "Hey... you've left your handbag on the back seat !"
