G'day....I am SERIOUSLY not joking..If someone tapped on my door and offered me a swap for one of these brand new with my old AU ll Futura with 170,000 clicks..I wouldn't take it..and I'd chase them out of the yard like a Joe Witty...If that's where Toyota are heading..GOD HELP THEM...FUGLY, GUTLESS AND EXPENSIVE...This is why car individuality is going out the door..It's either crap like this that over a ten year period would probably cost way more to maintain than a good old Aussie Ford or Holden once you factor in parts , specialist maintenance ,damage repairs and battery matters..I've now also got a pristine lightning silver XR6..and there is a universe of difference between the looks and functionality between that and a Prius..Even the name is stupid .Cheers Rod..

Any new car review should include the $RRP cost for a minor bingle.

* 1 headlight
* Bumper
* Grille
* 1 guard

Actually.... that would probably write the car off... as well as the cost of insurance for 3-4 types of drivers.

I think NRMA used to do it years ago... I bet in some models that list of parts could be 30-40% of the RRP of a new car.

Just insane when you think about it. The markup on these things is a joke. They are probably using the same pricing philosophy as the small home office printer industry.

I remember getting a price for some black bezel lights for my ST. They were around the 1400 mark for light and ballast.

What you do is buy a car with 5 or 7 year warranty and trade it before the warranty expires!!!!

Where's the fun in that?

I think we all need 5 years behind the wheel of a Fiat Punto or Alfa Giulietta to appreciate how lucky we are

Has anyone tested the validity of the 5-7 year warranties on offer?

Oh yeah I hear ya. The way I'm going about things is spending $6000 on any of my vehicles and it'll be rebuilt and ready to rock for another 300,000kms and will outlive any new modern car. Not happy when I see good cars being trashed out bush as they need to be somewhat preserved.

If you can ignore the horrifying environmental damage from the mining, production, and transport all over the world of the materials used to make a Prius (or other hybrid or electric car), then go for it you smug git...

I remember years ago Wheels magazine (the mid 1990's I believe) had a cover article on the astounding price of some new car parts. It had some new Mazda and said "Meet the new thousand dollar taillight", and other staggering prices.
Then in the early to mid 2000's the 100 series Landcruiser-based Lexus luxury four wheel drive came out with special Xenon headlights and they were about $3000 each.

And thus began the trend of cars being written off by insurance companies for relatively minor damage...

Oh, and the looks...?

Deliberate alright.
When the first Prius came out, they did focus groups of likely buyers and showed them various models. The standard thought among potential Prius owners was that they wanted the thing to look out-there and different. Seems they not only wanted to drive a hybrid, but more importantly they wanted to be seen to be driving a hybrid...a kind of "look at me look at me and how environmentally friendly I am and you are not" philosophy...

Which is why the mechanically similar but very ordinary looking Honda Civic Hybrid (exactly the same appearance as the "normal" Civic) wasn't as successful as the Prius. What's the point if people don't know you're driving a hybrid, for gods sake????

Toured the Prius plant in Japan a few years back...asked the question of batteries and disposal/pollution...answer was "That not Toyotas problem, Panasonic problem"
Next question was about the braking dramas that were making headlines at the time...guide forgot how to speak English after that...
