A few years ago (about 1999) I bought an XF ex-cab. I paid about $1500 and it had approx 350,000km on the clock: it was only a cab for about a year as their "proper" cab was written off so they transferred all the taxi gear into their family sedan. The motor was tired, I knew that when I bought it, but the rest of the car was surprisingly good. I drove approx another 100,000km trouble free (I did replace the motor).

As others have said, if you look around and know what you are looking at you can find some good ex-taxis. I've seen a VT Commodore ex-taxi that was a real POS, it was sold to the wreckers for only a few hundred $$ and that was over it's value IMO (not because it was a Commodore, just because it was a POS!) It had several body repairs that were just bogged up and painted with spray can (overspray everywhere) so I can only imagine what the mechanicals were like.

Drifter maybe :P??

Nah the whole point of buying an ex-cab for me is to get a relatively new car for cheap.
Plus it already has a side-mount handbrake and is easily the best looking Falcon when paired with a kit. Will look tuff painted matt black too.

Yep thats right, drift car. Decided to put the turbo kit on it instead of the EA, get some coilovers and stick a spool or maybe a Kaaz LSD in the rear. Then strip the car and possibly put a roll cage in it.

non-taxi AUs have devauled a lot but theyre still around the 10grand mark. Thats more than double wat an ex-taxi is and is pointless if im replacing everything anyway.

I like the idea of an AU drifter.

I know a guy that runs a taxi depot, i'll see if he's knows of anyone that is selling an ex-taxi AU for ya.

I have an EF ex-taxi. It has done about 710,000k's but when i can get a car that late on apprentice wages at $1750. I wouldn't be complaining. And running it on gas is a lot cheaper than what my mates have bought.

Taxis are rattly horrible things. For similar money you could get a good EB or ED with under 200,000km in good cond and cleaner etc etc.

I don't care if people reckon there well maintained because every cab I've been in (even BAs) have been rattly old heaps of crap. As for the savings on gas, that would probably be offset by not having a stinking pile of poo to drive. Anyone who says an ex taxi is a good car has obviously never owned a good car.

Get an EB/ED!

I had an EB ex taxi, owned it for about 3 1/2 years, had over 1,000,000 K's on it when I bought it. Had the original motor, never rebuilt, but had the head off once at about 30,000 k's and that’s it, was on its third gearbox.
It used to keep up with my mates EL XR 6, was reliable as all hell, and pulled one mean skid. It was the most reliable and fuel efficient cars I ever owned...
Would still have it, but some guy failed to stop at a stop sign and t-boned me.

Go the taxi’s….

Guys,

Ex cabs are not necessarily a bad buy.

I got my AUII a while ago (should have still been on the road) and I've done over 16,000 kms of hard driving in it everyday and it has never broken down.

Yes - I change the oil every 5000kms (you should in any car you enjoy driving).

Gas engine's can last longer than petrol engine's so I'm not sure what Yaw was talking about.

Obviously you have to watch for shabby one's (same as private cars), but there are alot of good clean ex-cabs around.

Don't get too excited about AUII's or AUIII's coming off soon, that won't be for another year or bit more.

Here's a pic of mine
