Anyone here been up the road that goes from Gunning to Crookwell and then on to Bathurst?

Looks pretty windy, but was wondering what the road surface is like. This appears to be more of a straight line from Canberra to Bathurst than the alternates.

Its getting better, there's probably only about 30KM of dirt on it now. Up to about 10 KM north of Binda it is good quality straight bitumen. As you descend to the Abercrombie river it gets twisty and turns to dirt. Between Tuena and the Abercrombie it is the same road that was built in the 1860s with several convict built bridges. It's now all bitumen from the Abercrombie to Trunkey Ck and on to Bathurst. Nice drive but probably not one for those who don't like dirt.

Regards,
Tote

Hi. Surprised that noone has mentioned the Newell Hwy, it was the go years ago when towing race cars on trailers. Turn off the Hume at Seymour to Shepparton to Tocumwal on the border, on to Narrandera then West Wyalong, after that turn off to Grenfell, Cowra and on to Bathurst. Its only about 30 K's longer than going up the Hume and through Wagga and about the same as through Yass and Cowra. Cheers MD

Oh, hadn't picked up that some of it was dirt

Not for this black duck, then.

Thanks Tote!

That's the way I will be going next Thursday, except starting from Sale I will be heading up via the Three C's: Cann River, Cooma and Canberra! Nothing wrong with that road last year on the way home....

Go through Goulburn, Taralga and Oberon to get to Bathurst. Asphalt all the way, great views and more fun than the Great Ocean Road. I just did it an Magane RS265

The Gunning, Crookwell, Tuena, Trunkey Creek has three sections of dirt. Its not the best and is a little rocky in places, could be a risk of punctures with low profile tyres.

Yass, Boorowa, Cowra, Blayney is a good road but boring.

For those heading up via Boorowa and tempted to let their speed drift up a bit, don't be, the road is fairly heavily patrolled, particularly on weekends.

Hi. Sorry, more like 30 miles longer, 50k. Must have been a while since I went that way. Cheers MD
