A mate applied for a very lucrative job, plenty of benefits, was all approved so went on the waiting list for the position, so essentially the next call from the prospective new employer was the green light.

At the time he was working two jobs, the first 4 days a week and a casual night job with the other (used to finish the day job and grab a couple of hours sleep then head to the next)

His wife recently gave birth to their first child so he had 3 weeks off from his day job, three days back he gets the all important call, heads outside to take the call, walked back in to work, packed his stuff and left in the middle of his shift!!! After working there for 5 years that's about what it meant to him.

I quit hungry jacks last year in the worst possible way. In the middle of peak hour on a thursday night. I wasn't ment to be working but a girl called me in and asked if i can work from 6-11pm. I said I got a big test tomorrow but yeah okay. I went in and one of the other workers said we have to stay back until 3 am because our boss wanted the place perfect for an inspection. I told the manager that I was very angry about being told to work till 11 and that they better get the boss on the phone so I can tell him noway.
She called me a little girl and stop whinging. I couldnt handle that comment. I don't mind working late but I just cant stand when people lie to you and try to make you work more hours especially since you're supposed to be doing them a favour. I told her to get stuffed and good luck trying to find someone to replace the shift. I said my goodbyes and apologies to the workers. They said they didnt blame me and they hope the manager suffers.

How to leave - Communication. This is what I am after, this what I have been offered, this is what I am GOING to do....then leave it with them.

Lying and telling crap to avoid having a difficult face-to-face conversation is a wimps way out. Be a man and tell em and then if their attitude begins to suck then you have nothing to lose by walking.

Just not turning up or walking out is **** weak if you ask me. Have more respect for yourself and show that your attitude is still in the right place by following through with your notice. This world is to small and gossip travels far.

Ditto about leaving on good term if you can, my industry is kinda small and everyone knows everyone. Can't burn a bridge that you may have to cross later on or that someone you may have to work with has crossed themselves.

One guy "john" who used to work here resigned because his mate said he was going to organise a job for him with an opposition firm that he had just joined. "john" then proceeded to tell everyone what he really thought of them (was never a diplomatic type of guy or able to hide his emotions) and resigned telling everyone where he was going. His mate's verbal offer fell through so "john" was left without a job firstly, a burnt bridge behind him secondly and being giggled at around the water cooler to top it off for being an idiot

I have left one job on bad terms after only 4 months but I was being treated so poorly that I didn't care. I still served out my 2 weeks notice. Once I had told the boss I was resiging he called me a few names in front of the others but I knew he would - he did for the other people I saw leave in my short time there....mmmm very professional outfit

do ur best to help out but at the end of the day its their problem. you have to put your self first. i cared a little too much for the last company i worked for and i learnt the hard way. so, do the right thing by them but dont let them hold you back at all.

i worked at maccas a few years ago. i was one of their best service staff, always getting 100% on mystery shopping tests. but they rarely put out a payslip and ended up owing me over $300. at 15 thats alot of cash. so i thought i'd ring up head office, scared them, got my money, and i was supposed to work two shifts on a weekend when the state manager comes in and ranks our store. i didnt rock up, somone else called in sick last minute so they only had one full timer and a trainee lol. the store went from top 10 to top 100 hehehe

I've been pretty fortunate in moving from one job to another but I have gone against the trend of leaving for better money. Every new job I have started has been a paycut from the one I have left (one time a 60% drop) - every job I have left payed more than double what it did when I started.

I have never been sacked or rail roaded, I've simply identified opportunities that will lead me to where I want to be and when the new opportunity is set in concrete, I tell my employer how things are, I don't negotiate to stay and then I move on.

Identifying the path you want to take is crucial, floating around must be pretty deflating after a while. If you can pick your path, make the most of the opportunities and do your best, you will get where you want to be.

A measurement of success isn't always how quickly it comes.

edit - I'll add that I spent the first 4 years of my career working hard and playing harder too. I payed for that for years!

Some good info in here, its nice to see that most people sometime or another have gone through this. Ive been at my work for a fair while now and ive worked so close to the boss and has taught me a heap of things and let me do things some people only dream off. So once i find something i like ill do the right thing and do it the right way.

I put my resignation in last Thursday. Going to do something I enjoy. Asked the boss to have a private talk in the meeting room. Gave him my resignation an answered any questions he had. All on good terms.

I am about to face this problem. I may be going to a Job that pays twice than what I am on (not hard in the auto trade). My boss is a matcher (matches, or tries to at least) but with the other benefits that the new jobs offers it wont be possible.

But the way I hope to go about it is, 'say it how it is'.
No Bullshit, just go in and why, where and how much I am going for and leave it at that. Also I will give him plenty of time.

Another thing you must remember is if your boss is as good to you as mine has been to me, thank them for it.

I think if you enjoy your job and can have a good laugh and work with a good bunch of people then thats worth more than cash in the hand in my book.

I once had a great job, used to laugh all day, top bunch of people, everyone got on really well, but the position didn't pay as much as other companies were paying at the time, trouble is I was very young and didn't appreciate what I had.

I ended up leaving to take up another position with another company that offered me a lot more money, still regret it to this day...........just wasn't the same, everyone in this new company was so gloomy and serious, no fun at all, not like the other place, only stayed there for about 2 months and gave it the flick.

1970-75 worked in a Department Store (Nock & Kirby's)
1975-89 worked for the biggest "ratbag" you could work for - Self Employed
Music School & Music Shop (Instruments Only) & Bandwork 2-3 nights a week.
1989-91 worked with Partners in an Auction Centre (Liquidating computer companies) & also Used Furniture Shop . Still good friends with them .

Moved to the country . Had a few casual jobs , then :-

Cladded houses with a ..Mate ? ? got ripped off . Left "not on good terms" (got paid $239 for a weeks work & had to wait 13 weeks for pay) We were paid $1,200 per house & could do 2 1/2 houses a week IF he wasn't so lazy.

Last job , managing local "Stock Sales Yard" (sheep & cattle) for 6 local Agents , started off as Secretary , 30 hrs a month , ended up 5 years later as Secretary , Yard & Paddock Maintenance , Penciller (recording Buyers & Prices paid) Yard Cleaner (washing cattle yards out) 70 - 80 Hrs a week on hourly rate . Had to leave for medical reasons & it took them 3 months to get 3 people to do my work (they didn't want me to go) . Left on really good terms , have been asked numerous times if I would come back . Great bosses to work for .

After many unfulfilled promises, being used and also working with (mostly) a pack of whinging pansys, I quit!

I found out I had a new job on thursday, went in and told the manager I had a new job and that was it, no more me. He was having a stressfull day as it was hehehehe.

Started my new job monday, and I love it. There is COMMUNICATION, no BS you know your job and where you stand and everyone is really nice and helpful. Its great

DO NOT TELL THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE THE JOB!!!!!!
I work for a company that my Parents own 25% and my uncle owns 30% and the **** head from sydney that owns 5% has sacked me because he is illiterate.(miss read an email).. the real reason was i told them i was leaving.

Don't tell them anything until you have the job and give them the notice they need. i thought being a family company that they would look after me more fool me.
I have since wiped off that side of the family uncle, aunties, cousins the lot and my family knows if they accoiate with them they will also be on the same boat. ******* SOB

I just started a new job at the start of this year. I will be leaving it very soon. I have an interview tomorrow, although I am not sure if that is the type of job I really want/need.

My reasons for leaving basically revolve around the owner being a complete bas***d, and the fact that he is paying me well below what he openly admitted I could be getting elsewhere. He also tried to be shifty and pay partly in cash so that I could avoid the tax man (just a bit dodgy!!!). Everyone else is leaving because of him too, so I don't want to be stuck with him.

Welcome to Full-time work!

I have been working in a foundry for 5 years now. Making car manifolds, mining stuff. Started off on the bottom of food chain. I worked my way up to leading hand. My boss used to kiss my *** now he is into me allmost everyday. He has all of us doing time recording which is ok but not when you get hasslled daily. Everybody is stessed out having days off, augueing with management. My foreman yelled abuse at me yesterday. I spoke to the manager about it he told me stop wasting his time. What am I suppose to do. I have never left any job on bad terms no matter how hard it was. These cheap china imports are going to wipe us out soon I reckon. :

My previous job was as a dishwasher and when I did quit, I drove 45minutes up to the restaurant, waited for the manager to come in and told him that due to my studies (I wanted to obtain a C average) I wasn't able to work. He shook my hand, told me that once uni is over and I want a job that my position would always be open.

Having the guts to go face to face with the manager about quitting certainly put me into his good books. Once in a while you get bosses that's both a top bloke and a top boss.
