What is she like as a driver? If she drives like some Sydneysiders and parks by feel etc, and treats cars poorly, leaves em in town while partying etc, get her an ex-taxi on gas, will be cheap to run, easy to fix up and cost half that money, be nice n big, solid and have air bags.

i know nothing about any of the small cars however my mate turned up yesterday and mentioned his little proton which he has had for 2 years and totally mis treated it, 160000 k`s and only ever had (1) yes 1 oil change in its life and still on original plugs, but he`s an old trucker who never gives it any stick (it would probably go boom), but he is very happy with reliability and economy.

I have worked on quite a few Protons. They are a pain. For example to change a handbrake cable, you just cant change the cable - you have to buy the cable, surround and brackets. To install take apart rear brakes, take out rear seat, take out centre consol, lift up the back half of the carpet and to make it easier remove the drivers seat. All this to change the hand brake cable.

i just got a 05 colt and i love it great car. ugly but fantastic car, great on fuel nice and new breaks are wicked they handel well if you know how to drive as i can do gower in 28 mins in it. costs around 35-38 for a full tank, i get 500kms from a tank. only thing they need is a good set of tyrees as the stock ones are **** house.

I assume you are talking about the Daewoo ones, as the Opel Barina's are very good.

Unfortunately if she has her heart set on something its going to be hard to change her mind. But, maybe this will help you. I had my heart set on a EA Ghia for my first car. It looked awesome as it was a ED XR6 replica, had everything (minus the power..LOL..it was MPFi though!). Mum and Dad sensed something about it, but I didn't listen and brought it. $6500 for an EA Ghia that cost me atleast $4k for the year or two that I owned it.

So the lesson I learn t, never buy a car thats been tricked up unless they have receipts and it is MINT, or, listen to your parents when your young...LOL

The mechanics of the Satria mightn't be to bad, but the rest leaves a bit to be desired. You could get a Corrolla, everyone else seems to. :

Just like any car, the early ones are not so good, but our 1999 model is faultless. Its not flimsy and has enough poke for a 1.4L. 110,000k's in and not a single problem other than me losing the key. :

My missus used to have a 99 model satria and i found it to be a great little car. Nice to drive and fully optioned. Had plenty of grunt for the size. (even smoked a non turbo VL commy) We never had a drama with it in the 9 months we had it, And as far as safety goes, The missus was 8 months prego with my daughter when she got rear ended by a clown in a hilux ute who was perving on chicks walking which in turn shunted her into a landcruiser ute and wrote the car off, But all she got was a few scratches and the baby was fine (thank the lord). So yer i would say it was a fairly safe car.

I think 5tumpy is on the money. Sure there are girls in the know about cars n all, but a majority of girls I know will pick a car just because it looks good.

Is Car City really the right thing to be doing though? At 11k your purchase is going to have 2-3k of dead money in it :S

Be better off going to auctions to get something like a Hyundai Getz or Toyota Echo..

No they're not a SWIFT, that is the earlier model, and they are pretty nasty as well. '94-? on are made in SPAIN, with multilingual controls and the indicator switch on the left.
My grandfather has a '98 Barina auto in his garage with 20,000Km on it. It's so slow it holds up the traffic. Obviously designed as a bare bones manual when you see how roughly all the extra bits are crammed into the engine bay. Its a major job to undo the to radiator hose with the transcooler pipes and air con in the way. At least they had not thought up space saver spares then. Have you seen under the hood of a Yaris? Beautifully engineered and miles ahead. You could fit a V6 in there even with the chopped off nose.
