I saw an American Ford GT today - Page 2

When I was in England going to the Silverstone Classic I saw Jeremy Clarkson in his Ford GT. We were in a Diesel Peugeot Wagon so we couldn't keep up for me to take a photo. We also saw an Enzo!!

RF have been taken over and are not currently building turnkeys. Also, you can’t buy a rolling chassis at the moment either.

That wasn’t a DRB. It was a GTD ( GT Developments) that was built in the UK and recently imported here.

Not all of them are worth this much, they range in price. The 20 million dollar GT 40 that you are referring to is the Gulf GT 40P/1075. This car was based on the Mirage chassis and was an aluminium and steel monocoque. It’s the most famous GT 40 as it won the Le Mans 24hr race in 1968 and 1969. In 68 it was driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bainchi. In 69 it was driven by Jacky Eckx and Jackie Oliver. GT 40s range in price depending on their provenance. If you’re after a Mk 1 that has a race history, and if there is one for sale, you can start at 1.5 million and work your way upward. There is currently a GT 40 XGT-3 MK II for sale in the USA. They are asking 3 Million (US) for it and it remains unsold. They may get something closer to 2 million but who knows?

Looks like a really small car.

I remember one of the top gear shows where Jeremy had just got his GT, and Richard parked a minivan next to it. Jeremy could not get in due to the piece attached the door that slots into the roof. If you get me lol. Then again, I don't think I would be using one of those suckers to do the shopping ;)

I have that clip on my computer, it still makes me laugh. The red GT in the clip doesn’t actually belong to Jeremy, his one is blue.

The new GT is actually quite large in dimension. Rebuilding an old classic was always going to be a difficult task when you have to redesign it for the modern day. The new GT is a sports car designed for the road whereas the GT 40 is a pure race car.

The GT 40 was only ever designed to do one thing…Win at Le Mans, although it was so far ahead of its time, mechanically and aesthetically. It still looks modern today.

These pics will give you some sort of idea to the differences in dimensions between the two.

I was also down at Philip Island, that car has been there a few times. A couple of years ago there was a pair of GT40s, and a few years earlier a pair of Ferrari 250 GTOs - that is something you don't see every day of the week!

here in brissy there are 3 i believe that are kicking about ... rearly drivin i believe. Ones is the blue and silver that live out near Indro way, another blue and red and i belive its a white one. I do a lot of driving and have seen those three. too busy drooling to notice numberplates and direction its heading or to think really so can't tell you if they live here in brissy, or like in nsw or somewhere else in QLD

There were 3 at the Melbourne GP.

1 GT – red with white stripes like the one in your photos

1 GT40 – red with white stripes like the one in the photo, can’t remember if it had the bubble – although this one wasn’t stacked in the two days I was there. Probably a different one? Was the crash at Phillip Island?

1 GT40 (replica?) – in Gulf colours. It was out in the open so I assumed that it was a replica. I was trying to have a look at the chassis and see if it was a monocoque or a typical replica’s spaceframe.

XBGS351 – there was a mid-engined Lola there (with a Ford/Cosworth V8) and a Lola T70 MkIII (drool!!). The T70 conked out in the pits just as I got there. As a consequence I got to touch (push) one of my all time favorites back to it’s parking space. The T70 MkII and MkIII’s had Chev engines (big blocks in the Penske/Donahue car) and prototype Aston V8’s in the Mk I. The T70's really should've been more competitive against the GT40's

Forget the ford trans, they are mid mounted, I think a porsche G50 box is commonly used, they cost around 7-8k second hand, or you could spend way more than that on something better, like a hewland box.

You'd be lucky to see any change out of 100k.
Some people might find that expensive for a replica, but GT40 replicas are not your usual slapped together breed, they are not meant to be a budget alternative to an origional like a lot of ferrari and lambo replicas, but they are basically a custom built race car and are top quality.
(well I guess 150k is budget compared to 20mil)

So does anyone know anything about these roaring forties cars, and how good quality of a replica they are? Ive been on the site, I reckon I would go with the audi transaxle, but I would probably get a DOHC modular motor from the states! Also this is a long term goal of mine, like 10 years time, lol.

The RF manufactured GT 40 chassis, in my opinion is one of the highest quality cars of this type on the market. DRB have an extremely good product as well. These manufactures cannot afford to make a bad product because ultimately, these cars are sold to enthusiasts and generally, they communicate with each other, world wide.

The Audi 016 transaxle is quite a good set-up and is quite easy to fit an LSD into, also is the Porsche G-50 if you plan on putting a sh*tload of torque through it. There’s a bloke called Ross Nicol who actually has a ZF transaxle in his. The 4.6 modular engine is quite good and Paul has engineered the chassis to quite easily accommodate a Boss 290, as the Windsor no longer complies with emission regulations and can’t be registered, except perhaps on CH plates. There’s other engines that can be fitted and can be made to go a lot harder than the ford and also weigh a lot less. These cars can be engineered to race or set up for the street, or a bit of both.

Brendo83 summed it up nicely with his comments. They are by no means a budget kit car. There’s a bloke in Tassie that ordered an RF turnkey that cost around $200,000.

Rob (the bloke that owns the red one) does a lot of events in it- tarmac rally/sprint stuff as well....

There is another historic meeting in November at Sandown - dunno for sure but he could be there. The next historic is at Winton on w/end of May 27th but not sure whats on the entry list.
