I'd just like to say that you can't bring in rules like that. Because in todays world damper would be classed as elecart (I know I can't spell) and therefore poofie. In reality we are talking about a Aussie Sanga and 100years ago it would've been on damper. As for turkish bread I see nothing wrong with that either as I eat heaps of it and with avocado on it as well. And ya don't get much more aussie than me. S... I even wear an Akubra hat every time I walk out the door.

Capital idea, guys.

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt: Brougham Arms Pub, Bendigo.
Price: $12.00 with pot of Carlton Draught
Date Consumed: 23/7/08
Comments: Have had numerous tip offs about this place serving up a ripper of a steak sanga, and they paired it with a pot. Naturally after hearing about this quest to find the best I ordered one. Scotch fillet was used and cooked perfectly, fillings were fresh and crunchy. Ultimately what let it down was prior to serving, I received a fork and steak knife. That meant one thing (that was neglected to have been mentioned on the menu)... it was an open SS. Served on one piece of toasted pipe bread.
[B]Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest):2.87- The beer was good.

Yeah the "poofy" element is open to interpretation, generally I would say that anything that contributes to the flavour of the sandwich is permissable but that obviously has limits.

I'll also suggest that sandwiches served "open" should lose points because its a bloody sandwich - you dont make one then leave it in 4 bits do you. Sheer laziness - doesnt matter if it ends up 8" tall, there should be a bit of bread on the bottom and a bit on the top. Gawd.

(end rant)

Is there a classification for "home cooked" SS's? I feel its often like Ford servicing - if you want it done right you have to do it yourself?

Yes Grum, but you can't show any bias whatsoever. If you made a bad one, say so.

I've been know to make a mean SS but I have some Kangaroo steaks sitting in the fridge that are beautiful. I might need to make a supply run to get the other parts.

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt: Kincaid Street Store, Wagga Wagga.
Price: $6.00 along with $4.50 wedges
Date Consumed: 24/7/08
Comments: Laziness got the better of me tonight and got dinner from the corner store across the road. This was your typical steak sandwich BUT it was made from fresh ingredients, there wasn't a single bit of fat on the steak AND they used REAL CHEESE. I was impressed from the moment I opened the bag.
Really good to eat and if it had have been double its size there would be a definite 5 star rating.
Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest):4.5 - with the extra half point being for the use of real cheese.

Name of Cafe/Restaurant: Beach House Bar and Grill CBD, Cnr Elisabeth and Albert Streets Brisbane City
Price: $13.90
Date Consumed: 26/07/2008
Comments: Very basic. Bread was thick, not toasted enough to my liking, steak was minute stuff, cooked beautifully (medium), gotta love char grill though, ohhh... my god. Too much greenery (lettuce and cucumber??? WTF??), tomato and onions were nice and came with a good BBQ sauce. Served with a fair whack of chips.
Star Rating (out of 5, 5 the highest, 1 the lowest): 2.5, I was far more impressed with my fiance's Maroochy Works burger, it sat at least 8" high

Ban coming then. I got a weird enough look when I took a pic of my sanga.

Best way to describe it is that I almost lost it on the floor carting it from the servery to the table. The meat pattie had to have been around 3cm thick.

Looks like the next BBQ will be pretty popular and not just with B Series if you're makin those Sanga's.
