good luck with your quest. if you don't find anything you like, mine will be here waiting. i'm sure if push came to shove, i'd fold on price

its definitely a buyers market at the moment. i'm just hoping there are people like me out there who would prefer the shape of the boxcars than the AU.

We are out there. Just have a look at the cars in my sig! I like the open feeling when I sit inside box cars. I don't feel claustrophobic; I feel like I'm sitting in my lounge room

Don't get me wrong, I still like the modern Ford product too (they are light years ahead in performance), but my preference is for the box!

You should be able to pick up a nice clean ZH Fairlane or maybe a Marquis in that price range.
Most have already been shifted to BBQ fuel, and all are 302 or 351 powered.
Plenty of room, plenty of go and plenty of street cred too as its still old school cool, but dosent look like a freighter or barge..

AU 5 Litre, if you could find a AUII XR8 they are fantastic for that sort of money.

Looking at either an AU V8, or a gunmetal grey ef el xr8, in manual. It's going to be quite a hunt.
Ruled out oldschool, as am really after something with more modern creature comforts.

I think gunmetal grey only came out in the EFs, but I may be wrong. I know I'm biased but I think box cars have a good mix of looking a little old school now (they are getting on in age), but with the creature comforts.

NF Fairlane Ghia V8 dual fuel ok, so its green & auto, but at 4-4.5k with 12 months rego you'll have change left over even after a manual conversion......

Go the barge, you know you want to....

are you familiar with how much a gearbox costs (if you find one) for a v8? let alone a conversion.

yeah, you tell him.

also any au2/3 around that sort of coin is going to be pretty ordinary. decent au2/3 xr8's are still 7-10k

i sold one of my cars today, so i'm halfway there

Have seen complete EF V8 manual conversion gear go for $500 - anyone even vaugely compentent with a spanner could do a manual conversion. I don't understand the problem

Everyone relax. I'd be spending more on a clutch and oil for the conversion than the box alone, so it's a moot point.
If I'm looking at a manual, I'll buy straight out. Not convert.
Keep the links flowing guys.
I did find an EL GLI manual, 6cyl, 170,000klm, for around 4g. Has a towball, very straight. Very keen!

The ranger I might bid on.
Not really keen for a jap car after looking up repair costs, ouch....
That Ranger didn't get a single bid. If you are still keen you may get if for a steal as it didn't seem to have any reserve over the $1000 starting price.

Id better load the bookmarked page, it was very nice.
Really keen on a newer model Windsor V8, they just have a certain appeal to me now.
Will still be open to options.

Prydey's coming over today for me to give his beast a once over and test drive. Hopefully knock him down a few $$ but I'm happy to stretch the budget out for such a nice car.

cheers for the nice comments guys. it feels a lot different from the passenger seat. you get used to it in the drivers seat so it was nice to feel the 'pull' it still has.

at least naish has something to compare to now.
