LOL this thread is getting funny.

Seriously though I don't doubt a plasterer could get 5 grand this is a bad skills shortage.

I've done 1st year as apprentice while at school and had job offers falling out my ***.

Now I'm a Cadet Engineer and getting my uni fees paid for.

Some people call it skills shortage some call it oppurtunity to make some serious moolah.

Oh and GO THE BLUES!!!

Christ I did a 6 year apprenticeship as well as a tonne of ongoing specialist training, work on some of the most high profile buildings in the country,in the most expensive city in Australia and I cant get 5k a week.
I should have known just to become a terd trowler in some little dust bowl backwater.

This is just too much : : : :

$5000 a week? I can get it done for $25 a square m, supplied and fitted was pretty good. I know I can get render done for ~$8 a m^2. How the hell are you earning $5000 a week?

I am also a teacher, high school science. I used to earn more as a labourer/leading hand. I was clearing over $1000 a week. Now I'm lucky to clear just over half that. I work just as hard if not harder. But sometimes its not just about the cash.

Teachers are going to get a huge pay rise, atleast in certain areas. In the last 6 years in NSW the starting pay for teachers has gone up nearly 50%!

Teaching pays better than many science research jobs, a friend at ANSTO recently had his contract renewed at $35,000 a year to work with radioactive chemicals and with a masters qualification. Hes quit and becomming a lawyer.

Why is that whenever somebody complains that we are becoming too American that the discussion becomes focused on the pros and cons of capitilism? I believe Yaw who started this thread was asking if we are inheriting too many American tranditions, their language, their culture etc. and losing our own identity (e.g. Halloween).

This world has many cultures and it is interesting to see the way other people live. As it is said 'variety is the spice of life'. However I am against other cultures either imposing themselves on others or being derrogatory towards other cultures. I believe as Australians we need to protect the 'idiosyncracies' which differentiate us from other English speaking nations. Unfortunately we are losing that battle as the introduction of pay television and the internet (to name a few items) is engulfing us in American culture. As the youth are the most impressionable they are willing to digest this stuff with little hesitation.

We are becoming less Australian with each passing generation.

The problem, in my opinion, is that we are having the American "culture" (if it could even be called that) forced down our throats whether we like it or not. If it were a free and informed choice to take on Americanisms, that is a different story. But how can it be free and voluntary when its AmericaTV on the idiot box pretty much 24/7/365 (with the exception of Neighbours).

.
Because 3 hard working people can pump out about 3000 metres of work a week, in plastering, meterage is floor area x height, it is 3 dimensional so 3000m x $6 = $18000 * 33% = $5940
