has to be big, abusive and unforgiving.

has to be fast with minimal handling. Basically from the 60's/70's era

Wouldn't really call anything from today a proper muscle car, the new Challenger and Camaro are retro muscle cars though...

for me a muscle car is from the late 50s to the late 70s it doesn't need to be a v8 but it does need to have poor handling ,bugger all brakes and some kind of race heritage, (eg bathurst).

most cars after that I would class them as a performace car ( turbos, efi, abs just to name a few).

I'm happy to own any of them I just can't afford the fuel to feed em

a muscle car is anything oldschool and intimidating really. And by intimidating i mean how people move out of your way when they see you in their rear view mirrors. I laugh when people move out the xw's way when they clearly wouldn't if i was in the mrs daihatsu.

Thats a muscle car to me

Skyline a muscle car???????????

I think I will let this video explain and you tell me if it's giving off any muscle car vibes

http://youtube.com/watch?v=iGROtBJWX...eature=related

I think a muscle car is considered a large displacement, affordable small/mid size rear-wheel drive American/Australian vehicle up until the intoruction of plastic bumpers.

It's a very iffy subject as the Americans consider the muscle car era ending around the early 70's while Australia was still producing muscle cars up until the early 80's or early 90's if you count the Group A Commodores up until the VN SS Group A.

from the definition of a muscle car(V8, big HP, smaller body yet still a bit heavy, usually a 2dr)

i would consider this a modern muscle car
Merc SLK55 - V8, 294kw's, 520nm. 1,495kgs - LOTS OF FUN

I dont think there is any modern Car that i'd accept as a muscle car except one.

http://thegarageblog.com/garage/dodg...g-car-package/

Ok so now we have a rough definition of what a drag car is or isnt, Would a V8 powered Panel Van (sandman, sundowner, drifter) be considered as not being a muscle car?

And what about all the Tonners with V8's in em as well as utes? Are they just a suped up work vehicle??

Agreed. The E49 Charger had more stomp off the bottom than any of the Aussie V8 muscle cars, absolute no contest. Most people think that with six pots and three dual throat Webers they would have been a top end car but nothing is further from the truth. They have unbelievable pull from the bottom and those Webers make wonderful noises. Still today the E49 is the most satisfying drivers car I have driven. Just an absolute joy to drive in the twisty stuff. As long as you didn't need to brake too often of course, LOL.

I would call the Dodge Viper a muscle car. It's modern, doesn't have metal bumpers, and doesn't have 8 cylinders. That defies all the common definitions on this thread!

dodge viper still falls under my understanding of what defines a muscle car. A viper would definately make cars move out of it's way, just the same as a nice charger or torana would.

i think for a car to be a muscle car it just needs a menacing presence and a look of get the fudge outta my way. Yeah a turbo lancer or whatever MAY be quicker, but it doesn't have that same presence of a car like a camaro/charger/ etc.

i got my old man to drive my xw the other day while i drove his 300C and even i was thinking 'wow, it looks like it just wants to eat you'. Definately had a presence on the road over the other cars, and the funny part is they came out with that 'presence' from the factory!

Im sure there are alot of Valiants that fit in to that category, the 318 fireball was revered in its day, let alone the R/T 265 Hemi.

Im still back at the Viper enigma.
Is it? Isn't it?.
I don't know.
The Viper definitely has most bases covered.
The Ford GT40 has a look in as well i'd say.

This is a no brainer guys.
The muscle car must be built before the last of the 4v big valve GT's were built.
The muscle car must have atleast 5.8litre capacity in V configuration.
The muscle car must be made by Ford and carry a GT 351 badge.

An F6 cant be a true muscle car as muscle cars must have won Bathurst in standard road trim, which is a circuit racing format, and as we all know the F6 is a crap track car.

Anything with air-con, electric windows and sound deadening is not a muscle car.
