That's Gold Poyal, +1. Nice looking car, front has loud echo's of the lancer and rear of the XF Jaguar but all up it looks thoroughly modern with a classy interior and should sell really well.

It's nice!!! I like the coupe kind-a look to the back..

I'm very glad they didn't make the dash overly busy like the Focus one..

This is the new Lincoln MKZ jpd80 was trying to post.

This car will be based off of the new Fusion/Mondeo revealed today.

Rear C Pillar to forward greenhouse shape looks exactly like Cadillac's. Someone should remind him he doesn't work there anymore.

"This really is a driver's car," said John Jraiche, program manager. "Fusion is even more fun to drive with specially tuned electric power-assisted steering (EPAS), a MacPherson strut front suspension and an all-new premium-level multilink rear suspension – comparable to Audi and BMW configurations."

I LOL'd. Not more MacPherson struts.... surely.

I dont think theres really any alternative for a FWD based product. This is based on EUCD, which in turn shared a heavy amount with C2 and has to underpin Focus.

It is the best at space, weight, and price savings (probably why the commondore uses 'em) But I was hoping for something more sophisticated from Ford as they take global product to the premium stage.

BMW use MacPherson struts on some models currently, but are going to use a double wishbone setup soon.

If it was RWD then there would be more options, but basically everything FWD uses some form of strut arrangement as a double wishbone setup takes up too much room. I think the only thing that could be expected is for RevoKnuckle to start becoming mainstream.

After having a look over those pics again I think I have changed my mind. I dont mind it, but what is it with Americans and cheap looking chrome rims..they are what lets it down but I do see how their design matches the grill (I think).

Still not fond of the front end, personally. I would've preferred a more conservative style, like the current Focus and new Escape. It might just take a while to grow on me, but for now, I don't find the front end attractive at all.

The overall car looks good as they have gone for the 4 door coupe shape at the expense of rear head room. Most competitors are doing the same, but it is a pity in a large (medium in name or US context only) car intended to carry adults in the back seat. I am having a bit of trouble with the overall shape of the front corners and headlights, it just looks a bit strange. One thing is clear though, there has been a sizable gain in front overhang, if they could bring the front wheels forward a bit it might help balance the proportions better (ie a Falcon version would look good).

Well, I hope lincoln sells over 4,000/mth if only to silence all the US negatards who think Lincoln is too far gone.

Hopefully our ex pat Aussie has even more good ideas to revitalise Lincoln...

The thing I find funny about EUCD, particularly as they are using it going forward, is the fact that Ford sold Volvo. They had done all the hard work and arguably had Volvo in a better position, platform wise, than Ford/Lincoln. I agreed with them selling all their other divisions, and closing Mercury; the platforms where a mess with no way forward or had limited sales potential.

However I truly feel that Volvo was one step to far... The hard work was done, and the extra contribution the Volvo sales made to platform and tech r&d, would have been easy money. (Overall.) Half a million sales would be easy going forward.

Interesting thinking you have there Brett and I can honestly see where you are coming from a short- to mid-term business sense and do agree.

However, with the debt that FoMoCo had at the time, the money generated from the Volvo sale was greater than what Lincoln would have ever been worth and with the replacement of the intermediate Mercury division with the Titanium trim level and the separation of Lincoln into almost it's own company, I think FoMoCo took the better overall long-term choice rather than try to play with Merc/Linc. for another 5 years, wasting money (they don't have) in the meantime.

Now, take what I have just said, reverse it, and you have what GM is still doing -_-

Hate to bring the old FWD vs RWD argument into this, but theres the reason right there for the long front overhang - its a re-dressed FWD Fusion.

FWD cars can never have proportions that look truely premium.

The Audi A4 and A6 seem to have very little overhang. They're FWD.
The Mini Cooper is FWD and has pretty much no overhang. Again a FWD.

You got me on the Mini, its unbelievable how little front overhang they have for any car, particularly FWD. Put it down to BMW's genius. But Audi isn't a good example at all - huge front overhangs which betray their FWD origins.
The A6 looks like someone drove it head on into a gutter at high speed and pushed the front wheels back 30cm or so...

But anyway, that Lincoln is a concept, it'll be toned down. Fusion looks great though.

Yep, the "overhang" thing again. Its pretty damn important seeing as it dictates a cars proportions.

You're right, and there was a thread going on a while back making that exact point about the FG's massive front overhang. The realities of building off an old platform? I remember reading Holden spent a huge amount of time engineering out the front overhang on the VE. Its not easy to do with crash regs etc, but its impossible if half the engine is located in front of the axle.

This is how it should be done;

In fact Holden compromised on it's in-house safety standards for the sake of it's very short overhang (they may have made for it in the 1 ft wide A-pillars?).

As for the overhang discussion, well i think the point is proven, engine layout doesn't dictate overhang

Im sorry but this overhang thing is BS and nothing but personal opinion, so I guess you are entitled to it.

Why is there a way it "should" be done again?

I have never, ever, heard any normal person discuss overhang...actually I dont think consumers would even know what your talking about.

Check out the overhang on this, what a POS.

Extreme example perhaps...but honestly WGAF.

Ahhh yes supercars, definitely the exception to the rule. (every rule has one) And yes, it is a rule. Porsche have long front overhang as well, but its been significantly reduced for the new 911 which has a longer wheelbase.

I cant believe as a car enthusiast you dont give consideration to the basic proportions of a car - its everything. Of course you dont hear 'normal people' talking about overhang - why would they? Of course consumers wouldn't know what I'm talking about - why would they?

We're on a car enthusiast forum to discuss the finer points of car design/performance/whatever, aren't we?

If it doesn't bother you, thats ok. But for me, the basic proportions of a car need to be good for anything else to work. And I'm not alone - why else would manufactures spent so much time and effort reducing front overhang? Or at least styling that reduces the appearance of overhang.
