Something I think would be interesting to see would be the difference between signposting a good quality highway at say 130, vs "unrestricted".

The reason I say that, is, if it's unrestricted, then it's up to the drive to decide how fast they wish to go.

It removes the expectation that both they and other road users may have, of them to (or try to) travel at 130 specifically.

i.e. people will travel at whatever speed they feel is comfortable for them.

and other users won't expect them to be travelling at a specific speed.

It'd be interesting to see a study done on a piece of highway, measuring the speeds (and if possible the driving attitudes) of all road users in both situations.

I suspect it'd be a bit like a busy traffic lighted intersection with the lights out. All of a sudden it makes the drivers actually consider their situation and become a lot more aware of their surroundings. Because the responsibility is on them. The decision won't be made for them. They have to decide.

Isn't that whats just happen in NT.

De restricted they were saying that the avg speed was about 140kph. Which is funny cause if you were doing 140 when it was restricted to 130 you wouldn't get nabbed. Its just the way people think.

For most drivers I think there is a happy medium, I believe as there is a point where going to slow is actually hard work and terribly mind sappingly fatigueing and boring , when you get to a certain point going very fast at the other end of the scale it also becomes hard work,.
White knuckles is fun for a period until the novelty wears off, then after that it just becomes like very hard expensive work.
It's all about finding the happy medium.

cruze factory standard diesel,, lovely gearing..

perfect gearing when traffic allows.

I got one of those back in the 90s without having to do any sort of course, and I could do whatever speed I wanted when out on the open road...it was a privilege listed at the bottom of my licence renewal that read "Tear along dotted line."

120 should do on the Hume freeway, accounting for the idiots as well. All we then need is for the police to allow a buffer of 10 km/h before they start getting itchy.

It should also be made mandatory that speed limits drop by 10 km/h when roads are wet/it is raining.

Not calling you a liar, but it seems odd that a car like the cruise has such high gear ratios, not being able to engage top gear properly at 100kph

2.0L diesel 6T45 Hydra-Matic.
sixth gear is the only overdrive and its a typical 0.746 ratio.
it does have a Tall final drive ratio 2.640:1 but nothing extravagant

I don't know the calculation, I think it involves the wheel diameter to work out the rpm at 100kph

ok went to Sydney on the weekend, the car does sit in sixth but does not lock the stall converter.
the engine sits on 1050rpm but will flair to 1600rpm depending on load.

if I manually select fifth then shift to sixth it locks at 900rpm then unlocks 1/2 second later..

That's impressively tall final drive, it must be nice and quiet in the cab ?

I can understand it being a bit too tall at times though,
It can be self defeating I think, if the revs are to low while it's under load, the motor will have to throw in extra fuel to keep it ticking over.....
There's those two words again , "happy medium".

Sounds like you are correct, but it baffles as to why its geared so high, as you said previously you need to be doing 130kph to get proper use of 6th gear. which would be fine if you were in Germany...
