I love my C Class, it’s not as flashy on the inside as my E Class before it but I like the brand for many reasons and have own many Benz’s without any major problems.
This is most likely my last car and I feel comfortable in its skin. Too the members who appear to have an irrational negative view I’ll quote the current Molly Meldrum ad on TV, "do yourself a favour….

actually regarding luxury cars , i can remember as a young buck seeing a friend of the familys 60`s ? jaggwah with ...... wait for it ...........electric windows .... ! powa windows woweee and one finger power steering ..... these days even the cheapest piece of crap has power windows and power steering and more buttons than the space shuttle , the things that once where only in super posh cars are now filtering down into the run of the mill cars , beemers and mercs no longer have the same distinction they once had , these are becoming every day mainstream cars just like the commy or the falcon ......... or the hyundai. |

Hmm, I drive a CLK and an XG Ute with a 5 poster Bull bar and a Roll bar . No wonder I have a split personality.

Just want to thank those in this thread who have made contributions on their experience in owning Euro cars, servicing costs, do's and don't etc.
Like many, I've had in my head for a long time that the ongoing costs of owning a Euro was significantly more than something local or Asian for not much return. How I got this idea is probably like many, based off half truths or someones experience I remember from owning a BMW in 1985 or something. It's been a good read to see some people's experiences today in owning a Mercedes or BMW etc. And while I probably won't be in the market for a new one soon, it's given me a more open mind in consideration in the future. |

There are lots of variations but in my experience most euro prestige cars are expensive to own and run. Price cut base model Mercedes and BMW that are missing half an engine don't count in that category - their only prestige part is the badge on the car.
First of all those cars are expensive to buy and depreciate fast. If you are looking at the older one and plan to do your own work - they are not easy to work on ( compared to aussie or Japanese designed cars). So if you buy a new one , service it at the dealer and it is under warranty it is pleasant experience until you trade it. They will adjust servicing costs to match cheaper competititors. Why there are BMW , Mercedes, Volvo Indy specialists around ? Because once out of warranty the maintenance cost at the dealerships skyrocket ( anything more than the Oil change ) . There is no need for independent Ford , Toyota , Holden specialists - most mechanics can work on them. Those are prestige brands for a reason - something like X5 won't be cheap to run. |

As a motoring enthusiast, I'm impressed with the amazing cars available at the moment.
I look forward to having a nice garage, hoist and all the tools. With mechanical confidence, access to forums for every luxury brand and high depreciation, ownership of a good used luxury vehicle won't be expensive. |

The rear shocks would punch through the floor in the boot and after you had a steel plated welded in the steel plate would punch through the floor and after you had an even bigger steel plate welded in it too would punch through the floor. When I lived in Sydney back in the 80’s there was a business near me that was constantly repairing Taxis to the point where it started to specialised in repairing private cars as well. The rough Aussie country roads were brutal on the rear floor pans of those models.

Customer sourced his own reco alternator from Ebay overseas, has it sent to my shop cause it was cheaper, at around $300-odd. It arrives about a week later. Its seized, not only that its the wrong alternator for the car. The alternator on the car is a 150A Valeo unit. He ended up getting a new one through me, my supplier had one in Adelaide, comes here in a few days, although its $950. VY Commodore alternator (same year as this Peugeot) is $200 for a new genuine Bosch unit. |

Anything that is classed as a desirable model even in a non-running condition is always sort after for the same reason and doesn’t stay on the market for long. How old are these cars you’re talking about and do you have any eBay links to the scrap value ones or are they just s-boxes like that of many other old undesirable cars. One of my neighbours has a 2001 VX Commodore which has hail damage from a storm last year and the cost to repair was quoted at about $2,500. He said it’s not worth it as he can buy another car for something similar to that amount. There are many Holden and Fords rotting away in backyards or sent to the knackery every year that the owners don’t consider worth the price of repair.

We have returned from 3 days in Sydney.
My kids played spot that Porsche and in those 3 days they counted +160 Porsches. We're back in Brisbane, and over the past 8 days they have spotted 8 Porsches. So either Sydney is full of rich people, or vast numbers of people are mortgaged up the wazoo. Last edited by cheap; 03-02-2016 at 10:00 PM. |

well my 2c... I have a hand me down '02 e46 320 coupe from mum that we had since brand new.
owning a bmw out of warranty is more expensive than the equivalent holden. Genuine BMW servicing and repairs are very expensive. I have been using an independent to get any repairs fixed, but it took a while to find one. It is usually about half the price what genuinine bmw repairs would cost. Though once I got stuck recently and ended up having to be towed to BMW and decided to let them do it. Nearly $2000 for a alternator and battery fitted. From then on said never again.
