Everyone with half an I/T brain saw the Census fiasco coming from miles away. The arrogance of the ABS with their "we have tested the system", "it will perform", "nothing to worry about". These comments do nothing but wave a red flag to every denial of service warrior on the planet.
Rule #1 in I/T, never claim pre-mature success. Duncan Young, Program Manager 2016 Census. Duncan may soon be looking for a new job. And don't forget these same people will be safely guarding your personal data |

DoS just means overloading the server with requests so that it craps it self. You could do that to here if you wanted

well the gov , and ABS said it could not be hacked ...
they challenged the IT world ,,, guess what , it responded .. -------or maybe it was just an inner site DOS attack , by so many trying to log in at once , to fulfill their Census duties , and they are blaming something else . either way , it does show that it was a shambles ... Yes our private details are safe eh.. imo ,, all this could have been avoided by NOT making name , and address mandatory ,,,,that is what got the populace of Aust angry . and then stating that all is well and safe, that was the Challenge in itself. IBM boss stated publically that it could be hacked .. Whom do we believe .... just saying it is what it is - calling a spade as a spade , so to speak ... |

Seriously, what info? so many paranoid people. Tin foil hats would sell extremely well on here.
All the info given is already readily available. As mentioned few times already, a census is just to give the government a snapshot in time. |

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-1...hacked/7712216
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) says it believes a series of hacking attacks which led to the census website being shut down last night were part of a deliberate attempt to sabotage the national survey. Key points:
This morning the ABS's David Kalisch said the census website had been attacked by hackers four times and was shut down as a precaution after the fourth attack. "It was an attack, and we believe from overseas," he told ABC NewsRadio. When asked if the hacks were a deliberate attempt to sabotage the census, Mr Kalisch replied: "We believe so". "The Australian Signals Directorate are investigating, but they did note that it was very difficult to source the attack." Mr Kalisch said the site was taken down just after 7:30pm after the fourth attack as a precaution to "ensure the integrity of the data". "The online census form was subject to four denial of service attacks yesterday," he explained. "The first three caused minor disruption, but more than 2 million forms were successfully submitted and safely stored. "The scale of the attack, it was quite clear it was malicious. "Steps have been taken during the night to remedy these issues and I can certainly reassure Australians that the data they provided is safe." Attorney-General George Brandis told the ABC the security measures in place were "more than sufficient to protect individual privacy". "The cyber security operations centre has been engaged overnight," he said. "It is investigating the matter." Race to get website back online The census website was unavailable again this morning. The ABS had estimated that two-thirds of Australians would fill out the census online this year for the first time, rather than on paper. Mr Kalisch said ABS aimed to have the website up and running as soon as possible to allow people to complete their census forms. "We have steps in place to counter attacks, [but] this one, there was one breach that did actually get through via a third party … and believe that we've plugged that gap," he said. Earlier on Tuesday evening Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tweeted that he had completed the census and it was "easy to do". In the lead-up to census night, the ABS spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on load testing and said its servers could handle 1 million forms per hour. People officially have until September 23 to complete the census online, and the ABS has said people will not be fined for not completing the forms on census night. "There will be no fines for completing the census after August 9. There's still plenty of time to complete the census. Thanks for your patience," the ABS said in a statement.

No dramas here. Lodged ours online @ 6.30pm & all good.
Also, no problems in getting a paper version ordered & delivered for my (elderly) father. Couldn't have gone smoother. |

They weren't hacked, the ABS and IBM woefully underestimated the load the system would experience. IBM needs to be held to account for this failure, with the relevant people who signed the cheques at the ABS to face a firing squad.
In an age where Facebook, Twitter et al are able to not only cope with far greater loads but laugh with contempt, this failure is inexcusable.

Did mine at that time and was surprised as all get out that it worked...but I guess some dude in Nigeria is currently selling my details and now knows I walked to work yesterday....
You got to laugh though...Is there anything that the Australian Government can actually do without screwing it up? |

Government departments. Just goes to show bureaucrats couldn't run anything bigger than a cake stall.
The incompetence is astounding.

Yet on Facebook, people put their name, birthdate, where they live (even country will do), discuss their likes, dislikes, how many kids they have, their relationships, what they eat, what they believe, addictions, how much they drink, friends, parents....the list goes on. That data is kept in cyberspace forever and it is very difficult for you to delete that data.
The ABS asks for a limited bit of info and woah, big brother. We must be stupid. Besides, I don't what the Anti Lock Braking System on my Ute is going to do with my info. Maybe it's a covert Ford update thingy?
