A very wealthy millionaire friend of his, who was in Hong Kong when the second world war broke out, sold off all his assets, shares, property and the bulk of his cash and bought diamonds.

He then buried them safely in the ground of a forrest.

He spent most of the war years in an internment camp.

When the war ended he went back and dug them up.

He was still a millionaire while others like him had lost their fortunes.

The moral of the story... When fear sets in, many will go back to what they trust and has stood the test of time, rather than take a gamble.

Indeed. I’d been looking at that (gold and gold based ASX securities) and thought the claim seemed at odds with Perth Mint’s official figures.

I wondered if the dip in crypto on February 25th was automated selling-down by institutional holders in response to the emerging conflict - it bounced smartly when people realised this was exactly the sort of scenario that crypto was supposed to be immune to.

Yeah..but you forgot to say compounded.

So if I said its value had increased 20 fold would you be happier?

no cause that's also wrong. and to use bad English - it's more wrong.

20 fold = 20x if gold 20x'd since 2000 I'd be retired right now and be spending my time racing various cars on the various great circuits of the world.

ok, keep going... how does that turn into "increased 20 fold" or "averaged 20% per annum for the last 25 years...."?

541% = 5.41 fold
20%pa compounded for 25 years = ~9500% (95 fold) - hence why I'd be retired if that were true - that'd be ****ing amazing

I asked if you would be happier if it increased 20 fold.
I didn't say it had done that.

Noone said it was 20% compounded...except you and the troll squad.
541% over 25 years is about 20% per annum.

I am well aware of the 72 rule by the way.

A commodity that pays no dividend is calculated by simple interest, not compound interest.

Do you know the formula for simple interest?

Not all properties are rented out, yet their investment returns are still reported as a compound rate.

Investments returns are calculated on the basis of compound interest in the vast majority of cases. If you're going to report the performance of a commodity as an alternative investment strategy, it is perfectly normal to use a compound interest rate for the sake of comparison.

Sure but the context is a commodity not realestate.

Let's put it in terms some here can understand?

On a car forum analogy imagine you bought an XY Gt falcon for 3 thousand bucks in 1971.

Then sold it at auction in 2021 for 500 thousand....wow

How would you calculate the profit over 50 years?

Gold simply has a buy value and sale value with its return based on the length of time it was held.

A related note for people using Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on an Apple device. For example, as used on some trading platforms.

You can enable this in Passwords without needing a third party app. When you need the authenticating code you go directly to your password list, tap on the relevant one and it gives an authenticating code with countdown time remaining. Just copy the code in and you’re done.

Ive lost money. So far invested $540 and currently sitting on $402. Solana, Terra, Binance and my main ones, with a few bucks on Shiba.

Am I worried? A bit. Will the cryptocurrency market head up? Not sure. Could I end up losing it and more? Maybe. But what gives me confidence is that cryptocurrency will be around in the future, and it appears to only be growing.

I’ve got another “noob” type question.

Do any of the popular platforms or apps have a configurable alert that’s price and trend, rather than just price. For example, $X threshold and falling more than 5% in 24H?

Hey mate. Yeah coinspot does. So you can set up a "Stop Loss" so if the price tumbles when you're sleeping it will automatically sell the coin.

Also take profit. So again if the coin jumps up you can sell and "Take the profit".

I rarely use these. I'm in it for the long term so only invest in the top coins. It's extremely volitile. Terra Luna was up over 20% at one stage today, Ave it can drop just as quick. I'm leaving to use the moving average and momentum charts.... But that's for day trading.

I really think the days of throwing in $50 on a coin then getting $1000 back are gone.

Terra Station is the native Wallet for that token.
If you stake Luna there you earn approx 6-10% Luna.
Not bad if you are holding for the long term.
Every few weeks I pull the interest out and re-stake to compound it.
The catch is if you want to pull your Luna out it is locked for 2 weeks or so.
I guess it stops people dumping the token when the market turns down.
41% of the total Luna is staked there.
But that's not all, you also get UST for staking as a bonus also.
I also pull that out every few weeks and send it to Anchor Protocol where you get 19.5% Interest on that. Anchor links directly to Terra Station.
Not bad for a US Dollar Bank Account effectively.
But that is still not all. You also get Air Drops as a bonus for staking, in coins from all of the other projects on the Luna Eco System. These can be accessed in Terra Drops.
All coins on the Eco System can be converted on the Wallet also.
So if there is a downturn I could convert the UST to Luna and buy more of it.
Ok one more thing. There is small fees involved when you stake ect like 20cents
The UST I earn from the staking is easily covering any of these costs plus still letting me deposit into Anchor.

At the moment it is at 19.38%
There is almost $10 Billion UST Deposited in there at the moment.
It gets complicated to explain it all but there are many videos that explain Anchor Protocol.
They have a mechanism to lend the money that is deposited, but at the moment deposits are way higher than borrowings, so I guess over time the interest rate will go down until it finds a balance between deposits and loans.

You can use Luna or Eth as Collateral at the moment but I think that will expand soon to other coins.

Why would you borrow this way?
Pros
Loans are instant and don't need approval. Loan is % of collateral @ 12.5%
If you cash out any Crypto to have to pay capital gains on profits, but not on borrowings.
In a rising market you could use you Crypto to buy more Crypto....free money.
Cons
Your collateral is calculated at the market price so it will vary.
If you deposit $1000 and borrow $400 and your $1000 of Luna, tomorrow is worth $400 you are done.

theres a problem coming for crypto apart from current world affairs , thus why the crypto market has done what its done
for a lot of coins on the market there is the abillity to mine the currency and one of the big coins Ethereum has had plans on the way this mining is generated for a while now and as the process come nearer and has cleared more hurdles which will change the way people are able to mine it , its causing the market to come down and also be less fluctuation as people that mine anticipate what direction it will take
miners use ASIC's and special set up PC mining farms to generate the coins
