It will require a digital scanner to listen. And these scanners are very expensive (Around $1000) so not many people actually have one yet.

You obviously missed the macquarie fields riots. I was streaming an OSG back channel used by the Riot Police.

Was interesting

Wouldn't mind knowing what freq they run on. When nsw go digital will we still be able to listen, if yes what scanner should i buy. Wouldn't mind a really good portable one.

youd want one with digital APCO 25 (if my memory serve me correct). you can sometimes find them on ebay for $800+ but your best bet would be to import one from another country like the U.S as i dont think many shops have them here.
youd be looking for something like this:

Sorry, didnt have the time to reply earlier.

The frequency used in the riots was:
467.9250

The Channel Details are:
Channel I Back-channel & Special Operations which operates on analog.

I think you should wait with buying a scanner. Its still a little too early to predict what (if at all) Uniden will release for the Australian Region. There are no digital scanners available in australia at the moment and they have to be all purchased from the US.

So when they go digital we will still be able to listen if we use a digi scaner, i heard they it was going encrypted as well any truth to it.

When they go digital, they encrypt it, as well! That means you need to supply a 6-8 digit pin code (or however many digits it is), just to unlock the digital network!
I know, I couldn't use a transmitter for 3 days, till I found someone with the code!

Probally wont take long for the code to get around if it works that way.

Well, when they changed to encrypted, in brisbane, my office was forgotten in the conversion, so I had 4 cars that could not listen or talk on the police network! Had to wait for one person to come back from days off, to program our radios. Forget trying scanners!!!

That is... I can't de-code the signal. There's millions of combinations of possible codes, and, don't know about the rest of you, but when I knock off work, I've got a family and a life to look after! Maybe some of the 'puter geeks may be able to crack it.. good luck!

Melbourne is still analog, all areas in melbourne can be found around the 467->469 frequencies if i remember correctly. They won't be fully digital for 2 years or so i heard, unlike SA and TAS which are completely digital and encrypted :(
