already been to two mechanics and they dont know - great

if its a carby the fault will be there or spark from the coil to the plugs
notwhere else it can be

recheck timing and for cracks in dissy cap

clogged catalytic converter-- yes if the engine has been burning a lot of oil - you can take the system apart and check to see if its clogged badly

go to the tail pipe and see how much pressure is comming out the back should be eneough to move your relaxed fingers

howdy y'all

i've recently purchased a 1985? AS auto telstar GHIA, it did have the same problem as carnewbie's (not idling etc) and i found the problem to be loose/disconnected vacuum hoses, probably best to check all vacuum hoses you can readily see for any loose connection; also they age poorly and may have cracked.

cheers!

Default rust aint the problem

all is well with my 85 telstar ghia... apart from the clunking noise when I turn left, at low speed it is only apparent on sharp/tight corners, however at higher speeds (100kph) it does not take too much of a bend to invoke a clunking noise, which i think is coming from the LHS
could this be the CV joints? (please no!!)
anyone had a similar problem?

cheers

from now on, i'm turning right!

Im repairing my mrs 86 kc laser. As far as i understand the std ign. timing is 2 deg. +- 1

I did it the slack way and didnt remove the v belt pulley. Im trying to use the v belt timing mark to get the motor back to tdc. Before i put the head back on a mate and i set the piston to what we thought was tdc (piston at the top)

Have u got any info on setting the timing, or getting tdc on these 1.6 motors (with me being slack in this case and not removing the v belt pulley) to make sure i can get it to tdc?

Thanks.

the person who is the guru on lasers is vippin you need to pm him
I havent worked on the laser engines in a long time and dont want to give you wrong information

for the 4 cyl put the timing pully back on and rotate the crank to tdc mark

at TDC the cam shaft has to have the number one cyl with both valves closed up
and number 4cyl rocking so exhaust or inlet is about to open

Hi
Yesterday I got a 1985 AR 2.0l telstar. I used to have an '86 AS so i know the basics around it and that they are a pretty bullet proof car. Anyway this one was overheated and i got it for free as the owners figured it was a blown head gasket so wanted rid. Any way i towed it home and i cant get it to start.
Have tryed jumping it and altho when its connected all the dash lights come on when i turn the key to start nothing happens. No click from the soleinoid or anything... the soleinoid has all wires in place but i cant get it to even look like turning over. the ppl i got it from said apart from the flat battery and the overheating it was running fine...
anyone know what i should look for, at this stage i figure i may have to replace the starter... unless there is a blown fuse i should be looking for?

PS its not seized up cos i can turn it over by hand

jumping the battery may not be good eneough
put a good battery in the car clean the terminals use metal bolt on battery terminals if not already fitted clean of the corrrosion

check that the earth is good to the chassis

now if that has been done take the plugs out

if the the starter wont work
the solenoid may have failed, brushes or the plastic ring gear internally

head gasket
there now maybe rust or water in the cylinders and plugs may not fire
something else to deal with

thanks....i tried the battery out of my car and still nothing... no sound at all... not sure how checking the pugs would help the no cranking thing tho??
im pretty sure it must be the solenoid or the starter as it makes no sound at all on start.
Once I can get it cranking then ill start worrying about the other problems lol
Thanks muchly

taking the plugs out gives the starter no compression to fight against
thats all ......... yep the starter has to come out

Hey guys, I'm looking to change the oil and filter (and maybe more) on my Gfs TX5 2.0ltr carby (89 I think). Motors done over 300,000kms, bit tired but thought it couldn't hurt.

1. I got some Castrol GTX2 20w-50, and a Ryco Z56B filter, sound good? 3.9ltrs of oil with filter change right?

2. I might also do the plugs and maybe the leads, suggestions on brands, preferably with model numbers? I looked up the NGK site, BP5ES-11 plugs ok?

3. Are the plugs and leads tricky to change? I've done it on my Skyline plenty of times, never on a FWD car though.

Cheers,

Tim

all what you have there is good

no need to change your list it is a carby model so no problem

the plugs - just use the right plug spanner and dont overtighten on a alloy head

dont get the firing order of the leads mixed up and remember the plug gap should be on the packet of 4 or in the cattle dog

need to strip the motor down
see if it requires a rebore
or if you can just re ring and bearings

std /oversize pistons/rings/bearigs + full rebuild gasket set /timing chain
avail from from repco supercheap or other

if too expensive a sec hand engine from a wrecker

ring around for quotes and best parts cost per item .. then off you go

look at the gearbox and drive shafts while at it

ford were not forth coming with that info you will need a test light to find the power wire and then after the earth is found the rest would be speakers

a previous post
Meanbow the good welsh lad

just finished stripping off the panels on his '83 Telstar and reviewed the wiring he did and this is what he came up with,
Meanbow always says
use a multimeter/circuit tester as well to confirm the correct wiring

Telstar(GC/GD Platform) radio wiring
Light Green - Permenant live
Dark Green - Ignition live
Red/Green stripe - night illumination(light circuit)
Black - Ground/Earth

Speakers
Front right
Blue/Brown - Negative
Blue/Brown with Green - Positive

Front left
Blue/Brown - Negative
Blue/Brown with Orange - Positive

Rear right
Blue/Brown - Negative
Blue/Brown with Red - Positive

Rear left
Blue/Brown - Negative
Blue/Brown with White - Positive

Thumbs up

yes just find a ford friendly engineer for the modification certificate

I would think you need the whole twin cam motor
and the engine computer controller
so that may need a wiring loom and a bit more work
engine mounts/ gearbox/driveshafts/brakes info I dont know about
